Thank You To My First Friends

Here's to the wonderful OLP years.

Thank You To My First Friends
Caroline Power

It was hard for me to figure out how to start this letter. I could've started with an embarrassing story, or that one time at the lunch table, but I've just decided to say thank you.

Thank you for being my first friends.

Thank you for teaching me what it means to be an amazing best friend. Thank you for teaching me how to trust and care for others. Thank you for encouraging me to be the best at every sport. Thank you for saying "hi" to the weird girl when we were little. Thank you for playing Harry Potter at recess with me and for all the sleepovers. Thank you for sitting with me at the lunch table. Thank you for teaching me how to play uno. Thank you for pretending to be the stars of a cooking show when we made lunch and pretending to be in a rock band when we were bored.

Thank you for all the lip sync practices. Thank you for sticking by my side through all my boy drama in grade school and making a "Caroline's Boyfriend List" and never letting me live the embarrassing moments down. Thank you for yelling at me when you all knew I could run faster at basketball practice but I never did. Thank you for always welcoming me into all of your houses. Thank you for always singing a long with me while whoever was driving blared music in the car to make it louder than our singing voices. Thank you for all those summer sessions at the Colony Pool, all the movie nights, the High School Musical party. Thank you for being a part of my sweet sixteen.

Thank you for explaining things at the lunch table and using lunch tickets to do so (lol Rachel). Thank you for hanging out with me at Prep football games and inviting me over to make christmas cookies and then lying about how many I actually ate. Thank you for letting me ditch you for boys. Thank you for introducing yourselves to my friends when I forget to introduce them to you. Thank you for putting me back on the right track if you ever saw I was lost. Thank you for letting me memorize your home phone numbers and always calling and hoping you'd answer so we could hang out.

Thank you for teaching me how to love who I am and for never giving up on me.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
