Old Souls in Young Bodies

Growing into our minds

Old Souls in Young Bodies

There's a unique outlook some have that starts very young. A keenness accompanied by an open mind and a grounded sense of being. For example, when little kids say things that make you wonder how on earth they could form that logic or when youngsters emit a spirit that marks them wise beyond their years. Coined as "old souls," having this strange and beautiful persona makes for an unique experience in an ever-changing world, especially as a young adult.

A challenge is always made of being slightly different than others. These kindred individuals with old souls know they think a little deeper and further off than most, but in the best way possible. Despite a bit of overthinking, old souls are both realistic and simple. It comes from a time of less, when the basics and tradition reigned but the possibilities of the future proved curious and insightful.

Old souls look at the world in a holistic way. At a very young age, we have questions that not every little kid has the capacity for. Stocked full of "why's," these young ones look to understand and find comfort in meaning rather than substance. The more age we gain, the deeper the questions grow and the more complicated things seem, the further our minds wander.

Finding lasting relationships and friendships with the ones that are comfortable being closed off poses an obstacle to the aging old souls. These kind of people consider their havens to be either alone or in an environment that proves rather boring to most. Opening oneself and trying to convey a thought process to another is difficult for anyone. But dating or being friends with an old soul is an invitation into a person that wants to ponder life and ask the questions no one has. Stances on basic things will likely be different though opinions and arguments will actually kindle relationships. We want to see things in every way and other people are lookouts into those mindsets. Loving on an old soul is unique, expressive, and in all ways intentional for both.

Becoming a young adult all the while knowing that your soul will naturally make you look at every changing pace, path, or problem differently than others is a frustrating experience. Our needs always surmount wants but we will hang onto what we want to do most and try in every way to compromise with our inner selves. Filled with thought and insight-fullness, rather than looking short-term, these individuals want meaningful, long-lasting fulfillment. A kind of introspective mind searches for purpose, looking to explore the transience of life.

Other than just feeling older and struggling to find commonalities among those within their age group, old souls live a life in a bigger picture. Unique to understand and interesting to know, these are different kinds of people: kids in the minds of teens, teens in the minds of adults, and young adults in a strange in-between. Young adults are facing this world head on that they've seemingly understood until new experiences collide with old thoughts. It's an odd place to be but like any other, old souls bend, though all the while maintaining hold of the spirit that sets them apart.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
