Old Souls And College Life

When you are in college, everyone thinks you are supposed to be loud, rambunctious, young adults that always want to part. Be it Hollywood renditions of college life or reality television, college is always portrayed as a big party. Every weekend is just another party to be had.

It is commonly said that you're supposed to have fun and experiment in college. It is how you find out the things you like before having to settle down. College is the last stage in your life where you still have one foot outside of the adult life. You're supposed to go out and meet people. Date a lot of frogs and maybe find a jewel within them. Go through break ups heartaches.

But then there are those who'd rather not do all of that. Those people are often called boring, but I call them old souls.

Old souls are those who are physically young but mentally wise beyond their years. It is as if, when you look into their eyes, you can see all this experience that they might not even be aware of themselves.

Old souls are those people who you usually jokingly call "mom" or "dad" because they are not being as reckless as their age would dictate.

They are those people that would rather not go out every weekend to get "turnt," or meet a new hottie that usually wont lead to anything substantial. They are those people that you look at and say, "You're lame," because they turn down the invitation to go out and "get stupid" with you at the bar. And even if they do go out and party with you, they are usually trying to take care of everything and make sure everyone else is okay.

Old souls often use really old catch phrases that make you kind tilt your head and wonder what the hell they're trying to communicate to you. Or when they do use the current terms of young people today, it just sounds odd coming out of their mouths.

They grunt when they try to get up off the floor and act like they are literally 80-years-old when it comes to everything—even they're diet!

Old souls are old people stuck in a 21-year-old's body, but when you think about it, they are also so much more than all that.

They are the people you go to for advice because, for some odd reason, they are super wise even though they are the same, if not younger, age than you. They can always untangle your thoughts and help you get to the bottom of what it is you really want.

They are the ones you go to when you're having boy/girl issues and need an ear to listen and a shoulder to lean on. Single or not, they always know what to say and what advice to give you.

They are the ones that you can ask if they'll go bowling, play cards, or hell, even help you with a puzzle or color with you without making you feeling like you're a disgrace to your college age.

And whenever you are having a hard time with all the stressors in your life, you can always count on them to find the important things out of all the jumbled up thoughts in your head. No matter what, they are always there to lend you some wisdom.

So yeah, old souls can seem boring and lame when it comes to going out and partying all the time. But really think back to all those times they gave you council, or you had a good time with them by just staying at home. They will always leave you feeling just a little bit better about your next step in life, and if you end up screwing up, you can always go back to them.

Old souls are great friends to have. They might not be the most ambitious party-goer, but you can always count on them to be there for you when you need them.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
