Going into college you're supposed to have it all figured out. You're an adult now and you're preparing for the rest of your life. The major you choose now will prepare and launch you into your desired career path. But, what are you supposed to do if you don't have a particular career in mind? What do you do when you can't figure out what you really want to do with your life?
Relax! A lot of pressure is put onto graduated high school students to have their entire life figured out after they've been told constantly that they're too young to make big decisions. Sometimes, if they've said they don't have a major yet, people question why they're bothering to go to college. Even though it's almost impossible to get a well-paying job without a college degree and this sounds like a silly question to even ask, it definitely only increases the pressure. Everything around you is telling you that you need to know exactly what you want to do right now.
As long as you've completely ruled out a major such as Nursing, something that you'd have to get into right away (or haven't ruled out staying a few extra years or transferring to a new college), then there is no problem with going into college a little bit unsure. There are always required general education courses that every student must take, regardless of their major, and these can be a great way for undecided students to get a feel for multiple different areas of study, as well as go ahead and get these under their belt.
Personally, I was undecided going into college and found my major based on general education classes I most enjoyed. I took a creative writing class and discovered how much I loved writing and would like to do something involving writing in the future. I also took history, science, and first aid classes, things I was pretty sure I didn't want to go into, but officially confirmed. Some of these classes required quite a bit of work and studying, but since I took them when I didn't have another major to worry about, I could focus more on them and do better. And, now that they're out of the way, I don't have to be worried with classes that won't improve my efforts in my field, because I took all of them early on during college.
There's nothing wrong with not knowing how to spend your life at age 18. There's nothing wrong with needing to take a few classes to find something you're passionate about. There's nothing wrong with waiting until you're sure because you'd prefer not to change your major four times. Let yourself focus on the classes you have and discover something you're passionate about. It will come, and you'll feel so much better knowing you only have classes for your major to focus on and being undecided actually benefited you.
