I don’t typically feel comfortable being negative in my posts to Odyssey because I feel like there’s enough of that, both online and off. However, it’s been an exceptionally tough week for me, and, I think, for a lot of people who value the same things that I value.
If you think you fall into this category, this is a friendly reminder that it’s okay to take a step back once in a while from all of this chaos. I would take it a step further and say it’s absolutely necessary from time to time.
I’ve recently learned the importance of having things in your life that will make you feel a little bit better, even in those moments where it has to do so in spite of you. Those moments where it seems like a better idea to lean into the gloom.
While I understand that that can be tempting, I can’t imagine that it’ll do much good in the long run.
I have a point here, and that’s to introduce you to some things that do this for me, in the hope that they will also do this for you.
1. Jenna Moreci's YouTube videos.
These are helpful to me because she gives great advice for fiction writers, but her sarcasm is also funny enough that I also watch her videos when I'm not necessarily working on anything.
2. Dodie Clark's music.
Dodie's music is quiet and relatable to a wide range of people. Some of her original music has a second video, which she dedicates to teaching her viewers how to play the songs if you're looking for a distraction and have a guitar.
3. Iliza Shlesinger's comedy.
Whether you're watching her Netflix specials, or catching up on her talk show which just recently finished its first season, you're bound to find something she's said to laugh at. Her comedy isn't without its questionable moments, but her show, "Truth and
4. Kaitlyn Alexander 's "Ginterviews".
Because Kaitlyn interviews their friends for these, the conversations can go to some really weird but often really funny places.
5. Alayna Fender's YouTube videos.
Alayna covers all kinds of things on her channel, there's something for all kinds of people. She covers veganism and positive psychology (I highly recommend these) and busts myths related to sexuality. Plus, she has adorable cats.
Again, it's okay to step back once in a while. Take care of yourselves.
