Goodbye, Oglesby Union
Andrew Miller

As some of you may have noticed, FSU is currently tearing down the old student union. The Union is a place I went to many times. I could always count on good 'ole Oglesby to keep my belly full. I remember going to Subway with my freshman year roommate freshman for a meatball marina foot-long because we could use our VIP swipe. I remember going to Einstein's once and realizing how packed it was and never going again. Then there was Freshen's smoothies and crepes. My go-to was the chicken caesar crepe with freshly grilled chicken sprinkled with parmesan. The smoothies came in sizes ranging from 'should have got more', 'just right', and 'I'm never going to finish this.' To add to the sum of restaurants in the union was Pollo Tropical, a local favorite in my hometown of Pompano Beach, FL. I grew up going there with my dad and loved the Caribbean flavor, so when I went to the Pollo in the union it felt like home. Last but not least you can't forget Chili's. I've heard stories of friends hitting the drink specials before going to class and while I never participated, I can say it would seem useful for a nervewracking public speaking class.

There was more to Oglesby than the food. Oglesby had two amazing lounges that made for a great spot to study or just unwind between classes. I loved listening to the piano in the Bridge Lounge before a test to calm my anxiety. The tables in the Krentzman Lounge were great for study spots when the library was too full. Sometimes I just came to the Lounge to chill when it was too hot outside.

An underrated part of the union were those pink lights that shined onto the ground as you approached. I never understood why they chose pink over garnet or gold but I'm not complaining, pink is my favorite color. Perhaps the most important part of the union for some people was Market Wednesdays. Every Wednesday local vendors, clubs, and student organizations came out to show their stuff - this meant selling products or dancing to the music that was always bumping during lunchtime.

While I'm disappointed they chose to destroy the union right before my last year at FSU, I know my sister will be able to enjoy the new one when it's finished. I'm not sure how it will measure up to the classic Oglesby, but time will tell. I'll be coming back to FSU after I graduate to scope it out and judge the food options. You never forget what you ate during college, for better or worse!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
