Since May, Odyssey has been testing the waters with a hand-full of content creators to deliver the "next big thing" to the Internet-world: video.
Since 2014, Odyssey creators have been providing millennials with groundbreaking articles weekly. These creators are given a written voice, able to project to thousands of other college-aged students just like themselves. By relating to politics, relationships, school, etc. the relationship between creator and reader has laid a strong foundation over the last few years. However, now including video, Odyssey creators will be able to connect to their audience in a face-to-face aspect. The base has been laid, now writers can pour out their opinions/feelings/beliefs in a more personal way.
I joined Odyssey because I enjoyed writing as a hobby. Now, I find it a passion. Now I find myself really excited to possibly provide videos alongside articles. I am one of those obnoxious people that watch YouTube frequently, and while Odyssey is not to be compared with YouTube, it is important to note that this new addition allows creators like myself, to try video as a form of writing.
Videos take time (and practice) to edit. When you are first beginning, you will want your video to look like a million-subscriber YouTube star. Heads up: unless you have a major, natural gift with editing software, something will mess up and it will not come out looking perfect. As is life. So go back and watch tutorials on how to work whatever software you have. Be patient.
In addition, videos may possibly not share as great as articles. Videos usually involve listening to someone talk, right? So when you're scrolling through your Facebook in class and see your best friends Odyssey article you can go ahead, read, and share right there in class (or you should, obviously). But with a video, it's a little more difficult. Those shares you get may be less, but they are readers/viewers that are invested in what you said!
I personally am very excited and looking forward to beginning this new chapter in Odyssey. I look forward to seeing myself and other creators bloom in this field of creativity.
My advice is to not be shy. Be bold in what you talk about. Connect with your viewers. Be humble and honest with yourself. And good luck!
