Why I Write For Odyssey
Jessie Searles

If you have been following my facebook page the past few months you will have noticed that I have begun writing for this organization called Odyssey. When I try to explain it to people, they get confused on exactly what it is. So here I am today writing an article about the organization I write for, and why exactly I write.

First off let me start off by saying that I am not a journalism major, I wasn't a blogger before, and to be totally honest, I didn't enjoy writing before. My current major is Supply Chain, Information and Analytics with minors in Political Science and Statistics and a Certification in Public Policy, yes I know that is a mouth full but it goes to show that not everyone who writes for Odyssey is a writing major.

In fact the reason I originally did it was because I wanted employers to see my written communication skills. I wanted to be able to prove those skills on a platform where my voice would actually be heard, not just on a personal blog.

I stumbled upon Odyssey when looking for platforms to write on, and I was drawn to it after I realized that I would have control over what I wrote and that I would retain the rights to what I wrote. The latter reason was the biggest one for me because I never wanted to lose the rights to my work. In the end, that was the determining factor for what platform I decided to write for, and every day I am thankful I chose it.

The other thing that writing articles has done for me is it has built a connection for me with people I don't get to see all the time. I have been writing about my different college adventures and it has truly provided me with a way to show people how much I am enjoying life across the country.

When I go home people will tell me how much they enjoy reading my articles, and how they will send them on to their kids or friends. Up until this point, I had no clue how much my words truly impact those around me.

Odyssey has created a platform for over 15,000 creators and we have over 30,000,000 readers. It has provided me with a place where I can provide my opinion on different topics and express my opinion on different subjects.

As a freshman, it provided me with a place at Purdue, and I am so happy that I came across it early in my college career. If you're an incoming college freshman I highly recommend you reach out to your team at your university and begin writing for them. It has changed my college experience entirely.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
