An Ode To Oscar's

One last time... it is time to say goodbye

An Ode To Oscar's
Thomas McCarthy

Alas, my old friend it has been over six months since I’ve felt your love and lost you. Your love was vast and huge. You loved us all equally and made it known. Nobody disrespected you, dear, old Oscar’s. You were more than just a restaurant that had reasonable hours; you were a friend.

Students are finally ready to move on, but sadly it looks like the Shop24 has lost its wits over the loss of its friend and ally. Odds are, it will not make it through the winter. As I sit here writing this in the Element 93 café which is, practically speaking, a superior place to eat and work, something bothers me. It just doesn’t have that Oscar’s charm. Something is missing. SUNY New Paltz lost not just an on-campus restaurant, but a part of its culture.

Most upperclassmen can say they have fond memories of Oscar’s. On those oddly giggly and disoriented nights, Oscar’s was there to serve a pasta bowl with nothing but warmth and a smile. Laughs were had. There was order and stability. If one did not feel like dealing with the sideshow we all know and love called, "Hasbrouck Dining Hall," Oscar’s was right there to support the anti-Hasbrouck revolution.

Once again, it has been a significant amount of time since you were taken away from us in a quick dash. Coping was hard for some. People transferred due to the pain. What could students do without their friend?

That’s just a major aspect of life. That one has to move on. The loss of Oscar’s could be deemed a first world problem to some, but it was a loss of stability. It is a shame that the new freshman class will never be able to be enriched by the aroma of the glorious pasta bowls, the burritos, and the “lit jams” as a cool kid would say. The longer time a person spent in Oscar’s the higher the chances they’d go deaf.

Oscar’s, like the Chocolate Rain guy, disappeared from the world much too soon. It is time to accept Oscar’s is gone New Paltz! Hopefully, the bakery is alright….

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
