Wake Up And Smell The Coffee

Thanks for being there for me 24/7, coffee.

Coffee. You either love it or you hate it. The smell of the roasting bean either makes your heart flutter a little, or it makes you completely nauseous. I am one of those people who adores coffee.

I'll admit though, it's only been in the last six months or so that I found this new love of mine.

From the decorative cups that it comes in from the local coffee shop to the endless possibilities of coffee drinks available to the warmth it provides my body on a snowy day, there truly is nothing like a cup of coffee.

While these little mugs of joy are quickly eating away at the money I earned from my summer job, these reasons prove why there truly is nothing like a cup of java:

1. Waking up for the 8:30 class is a little easier with coffee's help

As much as college students may try to go to bed early, it is inevitable that the average student goes to bed (much) later than midnight. And, unfortunately, most students are forced into at least one 8:30 A.M. class during their time in college.

But, have no fear! A cup of coffee is sure to make those mornings a smidge easier.

Whether you fill up your travel mug at the dining hall or choose to quickly swing by your nearest coffee shop, there is no shortage of coffee available on college campuses.

2. It makes my cracked, freezing Michigan hands a little warmer

My hands, at this point in the winter, are cracked, seemingly beyond repair. I have tried every lotion and cream imaginable. My hands are also always cold. I wear fuzzy, warm gloves, yet my fingers are constantly tingling and numb.

However, after a mere minute of holding a cup of coffee, my fingers are finally able to thaw out and I get feeling back in them.

3. Coffee is a great way to catch up with friends

Haven't seen your friends since before winter break? Ask them to meet at a coffee shop to catch up. Almost everyone can find something they love (even non-coffee lovers can get hot chocolate or tea).

Also, it's less expensive than meeting for lunch or dinner. For a few dollars, you can avoid the dining hall scene and have some quality time with a friend.

4. The health benefits are endless

Coffee has been shown to potentially help people lose body fat, lower their chance of getting Type 2 diabetes, and put them in a better mood.

So, not only does it taste delicious, coffee may actually be good for you. What more could a person ask for?

5. Allows college students to pull an all-nighter when they "forgot" the essay due tomorrow

We have all been there. Whether you actually forgot that the assignment was due, or just procrastinated, everyone experiences all-nighters in college. A fabulous cup of coffee is pretty much a necessity during these times, which is why many coffee shops on campuses are open so late.

Instead of being ashamed of your reliance on coffee, embrace it. Experiment with the endless coffee creations available until you find “your signature coffee drink." There are worse addictions I can think of. Enjoy!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
