What Is It Like To Be The Odd Corn Stalk?
Kelsey Slager

Being the odd corn stalk is very hard at times. You get judged and at times you can fit right in. When you look out into the field and see the random tall corn stalk, it sticks out. There is always a bunch of people that stick out in the crowd. They either look funny, act weird, or don’t speak until someone talks to them. People will judge them right away because they aren’t like them. The odd corn stalk is the same way, people are getting judged by the other corn stalks and they feel left out. That is how this society is messed up. A lot of people get judged because they are odd and don’t fit in. I know what it feels like to be the odd corn stalk in the group. Since I am tall and skinny, everybody would judge me because they thought I had an eating disorder. What would they do if I actually did have an eating disorder? In this society, they would not care at all because judging people is supposedly OK. People judge so easy because they do not care what anyone thinks. Growing up in the agriculture society is very different. It is easy and hard at times. I grew up coming from a rodeo background. My dad used to ride bulls and I used to ride my horses. People would always judge me because I am a “horse” girl. But, actually, I am not. I love cattle so much more. I accepted a job working on a cattle farm this summer and everybody judges me because I grew up with horses. My best friend got me started on cattle then I helped her for almost two years during the summer traveling from county fair to county fair then state to state. I would always get judged because I was just a horse girl trying to fit into the cattle lifestyle. From getting up at 3 a.m. for show day to not going to bed til midnight. It was always hard because it was just what horse people did too. We would randomly go check on horses in the middle of the night just like the cattle people. We would work countless of ours like the cattle people. We would spend countless of money on the horses just like the cattle people. I would think again before you judge. People also judge me because I don’t think before I speak. By saying that, whatever is on my mind I just say it. It upsets some people because I just tell the truth and will tell them how it is. That one corn stalk you see out there standing above everybody you cannot judge anymore because they will get hurt feelings. When you judge me, it truthfully hurts. I get self-conscious. Sometimes, when people say mean things about me or call me mean names. It hurts when everybody judges you just because you do not fit in. I know I am different and I am proud to be different than everyone else but when you are the odd corn stalk out of the bunch it sometimes can be extremely hard. I stress and stress about what happens if I do not fit it? What happens if that one girl is going to judge me? I think we need to stop judging the odd cornstalk out of the field of people and accept everyone for who they are. If we accept everyone for who they are, that makes life so much easier because everyone will get along. I know it is hard getting along with everyone but when you are hurting someone’s feelings you need to accept the fact you are putting them down and get over it. Being the odd corn stalk out of the bunch is extremely hard but in the long run it makes up for it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
