Personally, before this week I have never heard of Spirit Day. Of course, we have all known about PRIDE festivals and such, but this exact "event" has stuck out tremendously to me. The youth are our future, their well being extremely important.
Well what is Spirit Day?
This year, on October 20th, 2016 take a pledge to to take a stand against bullying our LGBTQ Youth. Those of you in support are asked to wear purple this day to show your support. On the rainbow, purple stands for spirit. It has been observed annually since 2010 by individuals, organizations, schools, corporations, and public figures. In effort to help raise awareness and support for our LBGTQ youth, GLAAD is challenging supporters to help raise $100,000 by October 20th. I may not be influential enough to convince you to support such a great cause, so here are some statistics about our LBGTQ youth.
Did you know...
49% of LGBTQ students have experienced cyberbullying?
56.7% of LGBTQ students did not report bullying because they had doubts the problem would not be solved?
61.6% of LBGTQ students who ended up reporting experiences with bullying said that the school staff did nothing?
Many of these students have reported feeling unsafe at school; 55.5% because of their sexual orientation and 38.7% because of their gender expression.
Many of these students have been verbally and physically harassed.
71.3% of these students have heard homographic remarks quite frequently.
Because of issues like these and other factors, some LBGTQ youth have shown depression, have become homeless because they have no where to go, or drop out of school because they cannot take the bullying and torture.
On June 26, 2015, The Supreme Court ruled that it was legal for same sex couples to marry. Although there are individuals that do not agree with same sex couples, everyone has a right to their own life. The least we can do is respect another human beings self wishes. Because of the excessive bullying happening to our LBGTQ youth, some of these individuals might never truly find their love because they are afraid to come out of who they truly are.
