Recently, a friend and I had a conversation about our hair. She's been wanting to cut her hair off for quite some time but has been hesitant because of the remarks she's received from people around her. A lot of people wonder why she would want to look like a 'boy' or get rid if what she has worked so hard to grow over the years. But what's the big deal? It's just hair, right?
For centuries, long hair has been the beauty standard for women. Long hair has always been deemed more beautiful and "desirable" in society, specifically by men. And this scares some women because they fear that they won't be as attractive to men. While some are just afraid to step away from the norm.
Women in the past worked to defy the norms set for women in society. Women had been subjected to the Victorian standard that followed them in the 20th century. However, the Roaring Twenties would soon change all of that. Women began to take matters into their own hands. Flappers played a huge part in this. They were daredevils who loved to take risks. These risks included cutting off their hair.
Of course people frowned upon this, but these women were fearless and didn't care. Flappers were intelligent, self-willed young women. They represented a new king of feminist who asserted their social and sexual independence from men. So why wait for society's approval? Cut your hair if you want to!Honestly, it's just hair and it'll grow back with a little TLC. No one should be reduced to their hair. Yes, it is a part of who you are but it's not the only thing that makes you, you. A woman's hair may be her crowning glory, but it shouldn’t overcast the person wearing it. Long hair is the social norm, but you should do as YOU please.
Women who cut their hair reveal just how fierce they are. Because when a woman pulls out the scissors you know it means she’s on the verge of an emotional breakthrough. As Coco Chanel once said, "A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life."
