Barack Obama, a Columbia College graduate, returned to his stomping grounds and gave a commencement speech at Barnard College in May of 2012. During this time of presidential debates and reoccurring attacks on women's colleges, I found it appropriate to bring these words back up again.
1. "I've seen a generation eager ... to step into the rushing waters of history and change its course."
translation: You are ready to change the future.
2. "Fight for your seat at the table. Better yet, fight for a seat at the head of the table."
translation: It's going to be a struggle to validate your worth .
3. "You need to do this not just for yourself but for those who don't yet enjoy the choices you will have."
translation: Recognize your privilege and take actions to help those who are less privileged than you are.
4. "Never underestimate the power of your example."
translation: Believe in yourself. So many others believe in you and aspire to be the person you are. Don't let them down.
5. "America needs you to reach high and hope deeply."
translation: You are important. Go out there and make us proud!
Thanks Obama.
