Anyone who is already Greek or anyone who is going Greek knows that sorority women are fanatical about this lovely thing called “Bid Day”. But why, may you ask, is it such a big deal? It is hard to explain the phenomena that is bid day unless you've been there so I will do my absolute best to make it clear.
Just imagine… This is pretty cool for you. You are stepping into my mind for a few short minutes here so enjoy it. As I was saying, imagine being a sorority member who just recruited women for three straight days. While you loved getting to talk to potential new members and bonding with your sisters, you're just exhausted. Your feet are torn up from the blisters you have from your heels. You're mentally exhausted from the long nights you just experienced. Not to mention, you have a permanent smile from all of the cheesin’ you have been doing all weekend because you have met so many amazing women. Lastly, you have not been able to talk to your bests friends who just happen to be Rho Gammas or Recruitment Counselor (if you do not know what that is, they are sorority women who give up their letters to help potential new members find their way to their sorority of choice.) While it's all worth it in the end, you're exhausted.
Now imagine you're a woman going through recruitment aka you're a Potential New Member(PNM). You have been dressing up for the last three days, talking to ladies from five different amazing organizations, stressing out about getting in XYZ sorority, and having to basically self promote yourself (self branding is wonderful for future interviews, just saying) to show why you would be a beneficial addition to a sorority. While getting to hang out between recruitment parties and getting to know the Rho Gammas and other PNMs, you're looking forward to the much discussed bid day.
I know what you're thinking, Jillian, what in the heck is this “Bid Day” you speak of? I still don't get it. Well my dears, Bid Day is a magical day that will be explained below with pictures from my own sorority experience.
Bid day is the last day of recruitment where new women (PNMs) have the potential to receive a formal “bid” or invitation to join a sorority. Look at me as a little freshy. So presh.
If you receive your bid, you can either accept it or deny it. If you accept it, you go into a large room of women from all the sororities on campus. Usually the sorority women are dressed in a themed outfit for their chapter and are chanting, dancing, singing, and ready to welcome you home. This is a picture from Oakland University's Bid Day 2016.
Once you receive a gift from your chapter, which is typically the theme shirt and other crafts, you walk up on stage and announce the chapter you are going to be in. As you could see, I was pretty excited about going home to my family Phi Sigma Sigma.
After announcing your chapter, you run into the arms of your new sisters who are so excited to have you!
After welcoming all of your new sisters, you finally get to welcome home your Rho Gammas. After a few months of keeping their chapter affiliations secret, they get to reunite with their sisters on bid day.
To top the day off, photos are taken with all of the chapter members and the sororities have get-togethers after where they get to know each other better. This really gives sisters the opportunity to welcome the new sorority members to their home away from home for their time at college. This photo below was taken prior to when Sigma Sigma Sigma became an official chapter on campus, we are so excited to have them in our Greek community!
Still don't see why Bid Day is so special? Bid Day marks the end of a successful recruitment as well as the expansion of our individual sororities families as well as our Greek family at Oakland University. We get to invite new sisters, cherish our current sisters, and get to reunite with our sisters who helped make recruitment happen! Sorority formal recruitment is a wonderful opportunity to become involved with people on campus. Whether or not you decide to go through sorority formal recruitment, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Sigma Tau, Gamma Phi Beta, Phi Sigma Sigma, and Sigma Sigma Sigma hope you will find your home here at Oakland University. Go Greek this Fall! Much love from the sorority women of Oakland University
