The 5 People You Will Meet At NYU

With a school as big and diverse as NYU, you’re going to meet a lot of different characters. However, there are five friendly archetypes that you can be sure to befriend.

While you're bound to meet hundreds of people at NYU who will direct your life in different ways, there are five students that you will most likely befriend your first year at school. Every college has a unique vibe that defines their student body, and NYU is no different. Here, these five players are all around.

The Actor

With so many students going into NYU’s Tisch, you’re bound to meet The Actor. They are the really outgoing person that you meet during Welcome Week, who wows you with funny stories about their audition for Tisch and their dreams for the future. On late nights when you are fed up with studying, they’ll entertain you with drama from inside their studio that you have to take as true because you don’t know any better. They keep you laughing and, who knows? In the future, you may get to say you were friends with a Broadway star in college.

The Business Student

You’ll run into them at one of the dining halls, probably Palladium while you’re waiting for your pizza to cook. When you hang out, you’ll probably throw out a couple awkward laughs when they tell you about something “funny” that happened in class at the Stern building that day. If you meet anyone who asks where you two go to school while you’re out with The Business Student, be prepared for them to answer “Stern” at the same time you say “NYU.” They’re kind of a cult, but will be nice to you as long as you don’t make fun of their school.

The Politician

You meet them at a party, and they’re dressed unusually nice for a dorm hangout where the music has to be turned off every five minutes in case an RA is outside the door. You ask about their major and will listen to a complex line of reasoning for why they think it will help them become a senator one day. If you ask them about what they care about, though, you’ll be impressed with the amount of knowledge they have about the minimum wage and environmental impact reports. You thought you knew a lot about the world?

The Skater

The laid-back student type—all colleges have one, I assume. It doesn’t even matter their major or school, but you’ll spot them in Washington Square Park laying on the grass and listening to the musicians play. You’ll wave to them whenever you see them skating down the busy streets of New York and wonder how they weave in and out of traffic without getting hit. Also, they’re always down for a chill talk and hang in their room whenever you want.

The Writer

Ah yes, the quintessential NYU student. There are a ton of them at NYU, and you can spot The Writer by the notebooks and novels tucked under their arms. While everyone at NYU has a special affinity for the color black, The Writer will dress head-to-toe in the color they describe as nearest to the shade of their soul. They can be as dramatic as The Actor and as passionate as The Politician, but they’re their own person so treat them as such.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
