Beauty, health, intelligence, and your ability to accomplish a goal are not defined by numbers. So often we define our self-worth based on numbers but we are so much more than a number. We are people with emotions and feelings, we are kind and generous and we should not let any number ever define our self-worth.
1. Your age
Your age is simply the amount of time you have spent on this planet. Your age should not stop you from chasing your dreams or hold you back from experiences. Whether you're getting married at 21 or going back to school at 43, you can do it: age isn't an indicator for the right time. You can accomplish any goal at any age.
2. Your number of likes on Instagram
Millennials: Why, why, why, why do we continue to define ourselves by the number of likes we get on our Instagram pictures? We're all guilty of deleting a picture because it didn't get enough likes or judging someone else's picture of the number of likes they had. This is a product of the society we live in and it has to stop. Don't allow yourself to get preoccupied with how many likes you're getting on social media.
3. Your weight
Your weight does not define you. Say that line over and over until you believe it for yourself. There's a difference between being healthily aware of your weight and being so overly conscious of your weight that it affects your everyday life. The number on the scale is not glued to your forehead and you are not defined by that number. While I can only speak for myself, I know that I am so much more than my weight and to define myself for what I see on the scale is waste of time.
4. Your GPA or test scores
As a student, it feels as if our GPAs and test scores are literally hovering above our heads at all times. We should be defined by efforts, understanding, and how we allowed our schooling to shape us but instead, we are defined by how well we test. Unfortunately, the U.S. education system has failed us because our schools literally do define us by our GPAs and test scores. Low ACT score? Sorry, even though you're an excellent student, no scholarship money for you. Low GPA? Sorry, you'll have to register for your classes last. Our schools may use our GPAs and test scores to define us as students but we hold the power to determine if our GPAs or test scores define ourselves as a people.
5. Your number of followers on social media
I know it is incredibly hard to not get caught in the social media craze, but we should focus our energy on the content we are sharing with the world rather than who is lurking at our accounts. The numbers of followers on social media should not define anything. We should be defined by how our social media accounts promote positivity and how we inspire others.
6. Your clothing size
The size of your jeans does not define you. Whether you're a size 4 or 14, as long as you are healthy and working to a positive body image, it does not matter. Stop looking at sizes as a death sentence. The size of pants you wear is not an indicator of anything. It does not indicate how healthy you are, how happy you are, or your self-worth.
To define yourself or others by their age, likes, weight, GPA, followers, or clothing size is such a waste of time. We are so much more than numbers. Numbers are numbers and that is that.
