Like many other college students, I love Halloween. Even though I have to work on the actual day of Halloween this year, I spent my Halloweekend enjoying a few different holiday-themed activities. The most important of all of these was, of course, wearing a Halloween costume to a party. I and many other girls all over decided to wear costumes that some people disapprove of because they're "sexy." Of course, the people who disapprove often use much less kind words to describe them.
I would just like to say, for the record, that there is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing a "sexy" Halloween costume. However, there is also nothing wrong with choosing not to, either. Halloween costumes are supposed to be fun, and as long as they aren't offensive or hurting someone, nobody should care what anybody else chooses to wear. It's fun to dress up, and there are infinitely worse things that someone could do than wear a Halloween costume that makes them feel good about themselves.
Unfortunately, the people who seem to complain the most about these kinds of things are other girls. The most common comment, at least from what I've seen, is when girls feel the need to say that they aren't like other girls because they don't dress like that for Halloween. The world would be such a better place if, instead of tearing down other girls for what they choose to wear as a costume (or for anything, really), girls rallied together to be supportive.
This year was my first time wearing a costume that could be described, in any way, as being sexy or risque. Quite honestly, I'd never felt comfortable enough in my own skin to wear a costume that was revealing. To be quite frank, I'm still not super comfortable with myself, but this year, I decided that I was going to wear something that made me feel good about myself, and I did just that.
There's no way I'm going to let someone who doesn't like how I chose to dress ruin that for me, and nobody else should, either. There's nothing wrong with dressing in a way that makes you feel good as long as it's not offending or hurting anyone, and nobody should be allowed to make you feel otherwise.
