At this point in the “holiday season," I think everyone has heard about the infamous red cups. If you’re anything like me, you’re tired of hearing about aforementioned cups and choose to scroll right past any content about them that appears on your social media. For whatever reason, you stumbled upon my article and decided to read it despite your disdain for the topic, so thanks.
If you haven’t heard about the red cups, I’m impressed by your ability to stay off the grid, but I’ll explain. Every year, Starbucks releases a holiday cup on or around Nov. 1. They are always red and decorated with snowmen, ornaments, stockings, and other wintry-themed paraphernalia. Design varies by year. This year, however, Starbucks released a holiday cup design that was different from previous years. This year’s cup is solid red. No décor, no charm, just red. Within hours of release, the Internet went wild (as it tends to do after monumental events). People were infuriated that Starbucks would dare to dismiss its usual holiday cheer. It has now been decided by the masses that Starbucks must hate Christmas and also Christianity.
Whether you knew about the cups or not, whether you like them or not, there are still so many aspects of this world that are more important than a cup. Here are five things more important than a disposable red travel mug:
1. Crazy things are happening at the University of Missouri.
As a result of the university not handling racial allegations properly, graduate student Jonathan Butler announced he wouldn’t consume any food until Tim Wolfe, the University’s president, resigned. The football team joined the movement, refusing to play until Wolfe resigned. On Nov. 9, Wolfe announced his resignation. There are ongoing protests at the university, rebellions, and threats. This is a huge issue for the school, and definitely something everyone should be taking notice of and thinking about.
2. Multiple cities were just bombed by ISIS.
Over 120 people were killed on Friday, Nov. 13, in Paris, France. This resulted in France instituting a national state of emergency and closing its borders. On the same day, Beirut was attacked by suicide bombers, killing at least 40 people. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
3. The presidential election is less than a year away.
In one year, we will have a newly elected president, and sadly, many Americans don’t even know who’s running. Now is the time for people to start getting informed. We are in the heat of the primaries and current presidential nomination hopefuls are Donald Trump and Ben Carson for the Republican ticket and Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders for the Democratic ticket. Get more information here or here.
4. College Humor made huge waves in sexual assault awareness.
The popular comedy website launched a new video promoting sexual assault awareness. In the video, a bear attack is used as an analogy for assault. This video went super viral and definitely awakened some people to the realities of rape and assault.
5. McDonald’s is getting mozzarella sticks.
Select McDonald’s locations are adding mozzarella sticks to their menus as a $1 appetizer option. While this isn’t exactly breaking news, if we’re going to obsess over the items available at drive-thru restaurants, I think this is a bigger deal than some red cups. Who doesn’t love fried sticks full of cheese? Probably lots of people, but that’s not my problem.
Regardless of your relationship with the Starbucks controversy, I think everyone can agree that other things deserve attention. So this holiday season, instead of getting upset about the color of your coffee container, maybe buy coffee for a stranger, check out the news, read a book and spend time with people you love. That’s all that really matters.
