The time of year is coming when incoming freshmen at colleges across the nation begin to ponder the idea of rushing a sorority. It's an important decision that advice from someone who's been through it can shed important light on. Here are nine things to consider when deciding if sorority life is right for you.
1. You get what you put into it.
Being in a sorority is a big time commitment, but a great investment! It's where you'll make your very best friends!
2. You will be stereotyped as a "typical sorority girl."
It's unavoidable, and everyone that wears letters goes through it. Just hold your head up high and know you stand for more than they are giving you. As long as you understand that the stigma around Greek life isn't true, you'll stay at peace with yourself. Take pride in your letters! You were extended an invitation to join a sorority because girls saw something amazing in you.
3. You'll connect more with philanthropic work.
Most all sororities participate in philanthropic work. By being part of a sorority, you'll take part in that, helping you and your organization to grow, while benefiting the outside community.
4. You will always have a friend.
No matter what situation you find yourself in, someone will have your back. With the size of most sororities, there are girls coming from many different backgrounds that understand all sorts of circumstances.
5. You'll always have a place to call home.
Whether it's to stop by and grab a snack, study, or see a smiling face, there is always someone at the house to make you feel at home.
6. You're part of something bigger than yourself.
Ever hear the cliché saying, “You become a part of it and then it becomes a part of you?" That sums up sorority life well. You can't help but let it in.
7. You'll find your best friends.
You won't be best friends with everyone in your chapter. The sheer number of girls in most sororities alone makes that impossible. It's difficult to get to know all of them to the core. But after a while, you'll be able to find that close group of girls that you call your best friends.
8. Your house mom is your college mom.
Since college is likely your first time away from home for an extended period of time, it won't be long before you start missing your mom. While no one can replace the real thing, you'll really start to bond with your house mom as a result. She'll be there for you and love each and every sister in your chapter dearly!
9. TRUST THE SYSTEM.
You will hear this all through rush, but really, TRUST IT (and yourself)! The rush system can seem questionable while you're going through it, but you honestly end up in the house that best fits you. Go into rush with an open mind, willing to find the group of girls that brings out the best in you.
All in all, even if you have the tiniest wonder in the back of your mind about rushing, I say do it.
