So, when I made it into college, I thought to myself, “What if I get a crazy roommate like my brother did?” Well, surprise, surprise, I didn’t get one! A roommate. Nope, I got called a week before school started only to find out that I was all alone. (It’s OK to cry for me, I cried too.) But it wasn’t the end for me! No, I made friends! One who actually chose to live with me! Her name is Kellie and since I had never shared a room before, I realized a lot about myself when she joined me in my room. I was the crazy roommate!
Go figure, who knew right? Turns out that when your roommate isn’t insane, you are! But don’t worry just yet, because there turns out to be many different kinds of crazy roommates. I’m going to keep this simple, so I’ll just talk about mildly crazy roommates and the extremely crazy roommates.
So, let’s start with the extremists, yes? Well, these people are the ones that tend to make you run for the hills and never want to share a room again. They can seem like nice people, but living with them is another story altogether. Crazy roommates can do a few different things. They can have extreme sharing issues and literally claim half the room as their territory. They can be complete slobs and leave rotting foods and drinks around. They can even invade your privacy and go through your personal items. Scary to think about, right? Well, you are!
But even the extremely crazy roommate isn’t that common. They exist, but to different degrees. It is the mildly crazy roommates that are just about everywhere. Yes, it’s true, you can’t escape us!
But unlike the extremely crazy roommates, the mildly crazy roommates are more fun to hang around, and not nearly as irritating. Sometimes. Anyways, mildly crazy roommates are fun because they make things more interesting. They dance around in the room to older music. They rearrange everything in the room as a giant surprise. They mumble nonsense to themselves, and tell the strangest stories as they wander around from one place to another. They’re just strange enough to keep things interesting but weird enough to make you think twice about them.
If the roommate isn’t mildly crazy or extremely crazy, that leaves you somewhere in the middle. That means that they’re somewhere in the middle and can range from slightly concerning to duck and cover, they’re out of their minds. When dealing with any crazy roommate, just remember a few key tips.
If you’re going to question them, prepare for anything from nonchalance to blow up yelling. Silence isn’t always a good thing—for the extremists, it’s more concerning. Learn to go with the flow, and enjoy the peaceful insanity. And finally, if you find a crazy roommate that you just don’t know how to handle, don’t be afraid to walk away. There are plenty of other crazies out there just for you.
