Ever since I knew what a sister was, I wanted one.
I wanted a best friend that lived with me, a girl I could share clothes and gossip with as I got older. Overall, I wanted someone to share my life with that also had boobs and wasn't my mom. Sorry, Mom!
Along came Emily.
Emily wasn't the girl I expected to be my sister. She was tomboyish, seemingly unafraid of anything, and didn't seem to like me all that much. But, in the almost twelve years I've known her, she has become my ride or die, and I definitely couldn't live without her. She'll be my formal date when boys are being dumb, my maid of honor, the coolest aunt to my kids and always my sister. I don't even call her step-sister most of the time.
So, what makes a sister different from a step-sister?
Not much.
A step-sister will still share clothes with you. Or, [insert family member here] will get you both the same exact pair of jeans, t-shirts, jackets or any piece of clothing. I can't tell you how many times my step-sister and I got the same shirt or the same jacket in different colors.
A step-sister will live with you, most of the time. When my dad was dating my now step-mom, he rented a house 45 minutes away on James Island, but I never minded the drive because I was just happy to see Emily. When I was there, my step-sister and I would share a bed. I remember when we got the house by our middle school, we got bunk beds, and we loved them. Having our own beds was really special for us. However, now when we're home, we share a bed again, but that's just because we want to. Even though we live apart now because of school, when I'm home I try to spend as much time as I can with Emily.
A step-sister will make some incredible memories with you. We have memories of embarrassing home videos, but some of my best memories are just me and Emily hanging out. From trying to make a YouTube channel at least five times to playing pretend in the backyard to falling in the snow just because we could to laughing until 4 a.m. about stupid Vines. All these memories I have to cherish for a lifetime with Emily.
And, a step-sister will always love you.
I love ya', Em.
