To My Not-So-Little Brother

Reasons you deserve the thanks you hardly recieve

To My Not-So-Little Brother
Carly Marmen

For the longest time, I was convinced that you being my sibling was God's way of testing my patience. As we got older, we seemed to push each other's breaking points more and more. It always was a game to see who could get the other one to snap first. Usually it was me. But all of the sudden, things changed between us. We become friends instead of enemies. Instead of pushing each other away all of the time, we actually began to enjoy each other's company. The day that switch flipped from you being a nuisance to being someone I liked hanging out with, everything changed. Since then, you have done a lot for me and you don't get a lot recognition for it so I'd just like to thank you for a few things.

Thank you for always making me laugh. You tell the corniest, most ridiculous jokes, but somehow I still think they're funny. Most days you don't know all that is going on in my personal life, but you have cheered me up on days that I didn't want to smile.

Thank you for listening to good music. While we share a similar taste in music, you have introduced me to some of my favorite artists. Not to mention you are always down for a concert. I can always count on you to be my concert buddy whoever may be in town.

Thank you for being up for adventure. You are always willing to go explore new places with me and find the hidden gems of our little town and all the places near by.

Thank you for being different. Although in many ways we are very alike, we are totally different people. Thank you for having a different opinion on everything and helping me to see things from a different perspective.

Thank you for letting me be an example. Growing up, you were my reason to do the right thing always. I knew you were watching my actions and who I was becoming. I had to be the best big sister I could to set an example for you.

Thank you for being someone I can look up to. While I may be older, I admire things you do. I have watched you grow up to become an incredible man who seeks God and I could not be more proud of who you have become. I look up to you and your walk with Him.

Thank you for just hanging out. Whether it be riding around town, listening to music, or just going out running errands, the time we spend out together are always fun.

Thank you for asking for my advice. It could be advice on what to wear or just asking my advice on what to do in certain situations. Your need of my opinion says a lot about how you see me.

Thank you for all that you do that goes unnoticed. I know that there are so many little things that you do that don't get the gratitude they deserve. You may think I don't notice them, but, trust me, I do.

Most importantly, thank you for being you. I can't imagine my life without a brother who is also one of my best friends. Thank you for being someone to confide in and trust. Thank you for being the person you are because I wouldn't have it any other way.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
