Before undergoing Greek life recruitment, I had no idea what to expect. Some schools recruit in the fall semester of freshmen year and some do so in the spring. When girls are recruited in the fall, they are automatically surrounded by a group of girls they can relate to. They can spend the next four years creating memories with those girls. When girls undergo recruitment in the spring, they already have a semester of college under their belts and have created great friendships. When recruitment comes and passes, no matter what sorority you join, those friendships will never dwindle.
People establish negative stereotypes about Greek life and sororities. As a member of Greek life, I can easily say, “No I do not pay for my friends,” “No I do not only hang out with my sisters,” and, “No I do not feel an added pressure to fit in.” I feel like Greek life is a gateway for building new friendships and networks to better your future. Since you are interacting with people of different ages, you are able to build your network and gain insight for the future.
Before joining Greek life, I had met some amazing girls who will be my future roommates and bridesmaids. After joining Greek life, my relationship with those girls has not changed; I have just expanded the amount of girls I am close with. These girls are understandable, supportive and kind (some even have a wild side), and they make me love being a part of the organization. On top of this, all of these girls possess one passion: their philanthropy. These girls devote hours of their time to help other organizations raise money to help causes like cancer research, blindness and reading foundations.
When people see girls walking around campus wearing their letters on their shirts, bags, coffee mugs or hats, they need to understand that those girls do not just wear their letters -- they are representing an organization and Greek life as a whole throughout campus and the nation. Their letters symbolize them as individuals, their supportive friends, their understanding chapter and their devoted sorority that is known throughout the world. The letters symbolize love, support, kindness, compassion, success, friendship and sisterhood. The letters mean so much more than just “letters.”
