I won’t lie; not having the luxury of a car in college is definitely doable on my campus. I’ve survived almost a year and a half without one, and if I really needed to I could go a bit longer. But a day has not gone by without me wishing (or cursing internally) that I could just drive to where I needed or wanted to be. Don’t get me wrong; it’s definitely nice not having to worry about how terrible my parking is or paying for car insurance, but lacking a vehicle is no easy task. Here are some of the daily struggles I have been experiencing for way too long now (ahem, Mom and Dad).
You would think that not having a car literally would make me one of the fittest people at my school
since I have to walk everywhere the bus doesn’t take me. But haha—you’re wrong. Sure, I really do have to walk everywhere sometimes, which definitely helps me reach my Fitbit step goals. But then again, not having a car just makes it that much harder for me to go to the gym.
Food wasn’t really an issue last year since I was on my
school’s meal-plan. Living off-campus, however, requires trekking to the grocery
store every so often. So now, I either wait until someone is able to drive me
so that I can stock up on frozen chicken nuggets, or I starve for a couple of days.
It’s totally fine.
I have also come to the conclusion that I am the most
annoying person in the world. If I had to guess, I’d say a solid 25 percent of the
texts I shoot out are just me desperately begging someone to drive me to this
place or that place. I’m pretty thankful for some of the most loyal and
dependable friends you could ask for, but when you have to ask someone for a
ride from the library at 2 a.m., you really can’t help but feel like a nuisance.
Who doesn't love spontaneous adventures? That's right, everybody loves spontaneous adventures, otherwise everything gets a bit boring and routine-like. Living without a car makes that a tad impossible, though. When someone calls me up to go on one with them, I'm definitely all in. But if I want to initiate a little sight-seeing in the mountains, or a quick run to Atlanta, I need to plan way in advance to see who will be willing to drag me all the way there. And that's not really spontaneous, is it?
Last but not least, what's better than getting stranded miles away from home when it's pouring rain? Pretty much everything beats that. I don't have enough fingers on my hands to count the number of times that this has happened to me. Sometimes, I walk out the door knowing that it'll be pouring later on. But deciding to drive to my destination isn't quite an option considering the fact that I DO NOT OWN A CAR.

So there you have it: my 500-word rant on why being car-less in college is definitely possible, but also definitely not fun. My email is on my bio, and donations towards a car are very much welcome (just sayin').
