When people think of soulmates they often think of a lover, a partner, someone who fits perfectly to you. Greek mythology has a story that humans were originally made up of four legs, four arms, and a single head that had two faces. But Zeus, feared the humans' power, spilt the beings in half, causing them to spend their whole life looking for their other half-- their soulmate.
Some people are lucky to find this person and some, unfortunately, will not be so lucky. For many people their missing half may be their lover, however, I think it is important to not limit your soulmate to having to be your significant other. With billions of people on this Earth, it is important to keep your options open. The ancient theory of the red string fate suggests that the gods tied an invisible red thread or cord to a person's finger or ankle and it connects them to those who are destined to meet or help them in some way. It does not matter the time or place, the thread can stretch and tangle but the thread will never break.
Sometimes you just meet people and they understand you more than anyone else ever has before in your life. It could be your lover, but it could also be your mother or father, sibling, coach, a person you pass on the street, your new neighbor, anyone -- the options are limitless. But once you meet this person you will know, and you will both have this undeniable connection that somehow, perhaps in another life you've known each other.
Personally, I'm lucky enough to believe that I've met this person-- in fact, they are not my lover, but rather my best friend. She understands me on a level that no one ever has before. No one else can I send a text to and say "I'm covering my balls in chocolate" and not get a "wtf are you talking about" response. Because she is my "soulmate," she already knows that I am referring to covering Oreo truffle balls that I made in melted white chocolate. We may live 18 hours apart, and only get to see each other once a year if we are lucky, but I know who I can always count on no matter what is going on in my life. A soulmate should make you the best version of you that you could be, they should stand by you when you are down, and celebrate you when you are on top of the world.
"Sometimes you meet someone, and it’s so clear so immediately that the two of you, on some level, belong together. As lovers, or as friends, or as family, or as something entirely different. You just work, whether you’re in love or creating things together or foxhole buddies or partners in crime. It’s so clear, right off the bat, that this is what you’re supposed to be doing, that this is what you’re for. You meet these people throughout your life, out of nowhere, under the strangest of circumstances, and they help you make a life. I don’t know if that makes me believe in coincidence, or fate, or sheer blind luck, but. It definitely makes me believe in something."- Unknown
To my person, thank you for getting me, thank you for promising me that we will spend our next life together as cats, and knowing what my chocolate balls are and all other things, just thank you for being you and thank you for helping me be a better me, without you, I wouldn't be the person I am and I am thankful that we have found our four arms and four legs and our strong red string.
To those of you who haven't found your red string, I sincerely hope that you do one day, because having someone that just gets your weirdness and encourages to unapologetically be you is the best gift you will ever receive.
