Ethan's (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) parents are killed by a drunk driver on Christmas Eve. To help support him, Ethan’s best buddies, Isaac (Seth Rogen) and Chris (Anthony Mackie), decide to cheer him up by taking him out for a night of alcohol and drug fueled over-indulgence. Although It makes the whole plot seem suspended from any reality. Think about it, lets get drunk to forget about a drunk driver killing your parents? But since nobody objects, a yearly tradition is born.
Over the years the three friends hear of something called "The Nutcracka Ball," a party that is supposed to be so crazy that it can't possibly live up to the hype but the bros can't seem to get an invite.
Fourteen years from their first outing. Isaac is a soon to be a father, Chris a famous athlete, and Ethan a struggling artist. Since adulthood is getting in the way of hanging out the trio decides to end the tradition and have one last Christmas Eve outing in New York City.
So when Ethan is finally able to get three tickets to the Nutcracka Ball, Isaac and Chris agree to go, and trouble ensues along the way.
That is it. That is the plot.
The weak plot isn't helped by the debauchery of subplots such as Isaac taking to much drugs, Chris wanting to impress his famous teammate, and Ethan pining for an ex-girlfriend …
Over all the film lacks in any substance that can be seen with out some serious reflection, and since the film is marketed towards the stoner comedy crowd it some how falls short on the laughs.
Though the laughs are few and far between, the really funny parts are equal to that of Amanda Hakcey’s Oreo video.
I mean its "comical" but you will watch it only if it shows up in your Facebook news feed, its not like you are going to seek it out.
Its nothing like Debbie’s e-Harmony video bio - which lets not lie, we all would take the time to google that shit.
Over all the film was good for wasting time with friends. If you aren't going with friends. I would recommend you wait till it is available to download or stream. I personally enjoy seeing movies by myself but 'The Night Before' is a film that is more social. One that you most likely only would watch again it if it is on TV, you are bored, and nothing else is on.
The Night Before gets 2 Stars
