Ever since 2006 when Twitter first hit the Internet, it has been a great platform for celebrities to keep in touch with their fans and other stars.
It has also been a place where many feuds have broken out; resulting in huge audiences of fans anxiously refreshing their Twitter feeds to see who says what next.
July 21st, 2015 was no different for Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift fans as a war broke out that had everyone questioning race and gender. It all started with the MTV Video Music Awards, which have been known to be a little bit crazy from the past (i.e. Miley Cyrus twerking on a foam finger, Kayne West interrupting Taylor Swifts acceptance speech).
The nominees for the MTV VMA Best Video Award are as follows:
- Beyoncé – "7/11″
- Ed Sheeran – "Thinking Out Loud"
- Taylor Swift ft. Kendrick Lamar – "Bad Blood"
- Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars – "Uptown Funk"
- Kendrick Lamar – "Alright"
Take note that Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" is not on the list of nominees. Nicki, along with thousands of fans, were devastated to find out that her video that celebrates females of color embracing their sexuality was not on the list. She took her thoughts and feelings to Twitter for her 19.8 million followers to see.
Taylor Swift saw these tweets and, based on the nominations for Best Video, felt the tweets were directed at her as an indirect blow to her "Bad Blood" music video that features models and thin actresses and musicians acting like super heros.
Taylor Swift responded by inviting Nicki on stage with her if she wins the award for Best Video.
Nicki responded by making two valid arguments. When Taylor Swift took her music off of Spotify to make a point about paying artists for their work, she was applauded but when Jay-Z created Tidal, another music streaming service that pays artists well, it did not go over as well with the general public.
She went on to say that on Ryan Secrest Online, an article was posted saying that Nicki "took a jab" at Taylor, even though Nicki "loves and supports" Taylor just as equally.

Images such as this began to surface the internet, making everyone question the influence race has on feminism in today's culture.
On a lighter note, Bruno Mars, another nominee for the Best Video Award, made a joke about the whole situation to his friend, Ed Sheeran.
Overall, this whole Twitter argument brought to light some important factors about race, feminism and equality in today's pop culture.
