Another New York Fashion Week has gone down in the books. The most newsworthy thing to happen was the arrival of "see-now-buy-now" items, meaning most of the looks were ready to be bought immediately after the designer's shows, which is a monumental thing in the fashion world. Overall, there were many strong collections this season in New York. Most of the looks were menswear and sports inspired. Another monumental thing that occurred at this year's fashion week was more diversity on the runway. When interviewed about her opinion on fashion week, Anna Wintour said that she wished more of the designers had taken risks, but the ones who did stood out including, Rodarte, Proenza, Alexander Wang, Hood by Air and Calvin Klein. Here are the top shows (in my opinion) from New York Fashion Week.
Rodarte
This show was Kate and Laura Mulleavy's 10th anniversary at Rodarte. They presented a show that was something out of a daydream. All of the looks were romantic and macabre. There were lots of florals, ruffles, and lace, along with shaggy furs, sequins, mesh and patchwork leather coats. The makeup was gothic with the models wearing a bold rouge noir lip. The 10th anniversary did not disappoint.
Marc Jacobs
Marc Jacobs' show took place at the Park Avenue Armory. It was transformed so that the audience sat in stadium seating around the white circular room with glossy floorboards. The show began with a very familiar sound: a text alert, and then broke into the ringing of bells that continued throughout the presentation. Models wore a variety of coats and gowns mostly in dark hues with a few pops of color here and there.
They wore their hair in 20s finger waves and had black lipstick and abstract eye makeup. Every look featured 1 foot platform black boots. While Marc's show was spectacular, the cherry on top was when Lady Gaga appeared on the runway outfitted just like a real model. Marc's dark show was a success.
Alexander Wang
Alexander Wang staged his show in St. Bartholomew's Church on Park Avenue, but the clothes and accessories were not so holy. Models walked down the runway in skirts and coats with marijuana leaves printed on them. There was also a glamorized prison jacket with the word "county" printed in bold black letters on the back. Every model had words like "girls" and "strict" written across their legs in the place of a garter belt. There was an oversized camo bomber jacket with fluffy pink fur lining, tweed and leather with metal accents, and pole dancers in the background. Models wore their hair in unconventional bobs. Alexander Wang's show was definitely something special.
Diane von Furstenberg
The model squad of Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, Kendall Jenner, and Jourdan Dunn appeared in Diane's fun and flirty show that represented girl power and friendship. The models danced to disco music on platforms while guests took many pictures and videos. Karlie wore a long gold sequin wrap dress and there was no shortage of prints or color. Diane herself actually jumped onstage with the models and participated in the most glamorous conga line ever seen.
Kate Spade
The fun, flirty, and girly show took place in the famous Rainbow Room in the heart of New York City. Creative director, Deborah Lloyd presented the looks by positioning the models around a circular rotating stage. Some of the looks included florals, baby doll dresses, high waisted wide leg trousers, herringbone coats, and triple tiered sleeves. This was my favorite show of fashion week.
Rachel Zoe
1930s and 1990s romance was the inspiration for Rachel's presentation. She showed a white cable knit turtleneck strewn with pearls, a black silk slip dress with lace and pearl side panels, a beaded minidress, along with no shortage of ruffles, more lace, feathers, and velvet. The most stunning look was a three piece leather tuxedo. Who knew there was such a thing? Leave it to Rachel to design one and make us all believe we need it in our closets.
Michael Kors
This was Michael's 35th fall show at New York Fashion Week, and this show demonstrated that he has been in the business for a long time. The pro showed flirty and romantic looks including a wool pea coat, peter pan collared dresses, an A-line sailor dress, a bow front shirt, and lots of cocktail dresses and sequined party pants. In addition to the gorgeous show, Blake Lively was sitting front row wearing a dreamy, romantic pony.
Thee were so many great looks shown at this year's fashion week. If you're lucky enough to be able to purchase some, go out and buy them before they're gone. If not, there will definitely be inspired looks at your local mall soon.
