New Year, Different Outlook

Changing the way I think after an off year.

New Year, Different Outlook

2016 was one of the absolute worst and best years of my life. I’ve seen many people reflecting on this past year, most of them were eager to put it behind them. I can’t say I disagree. To be honest, I’m just glad I didn’t drop before the ball did.

It was a year of change for me. I moved out of my parent’s house, worked at three different jobs, changed majors, and decided that purple would be my new favorite color. My “to do” list seemed to be ever-growing and ironically, so was the monstrous pile of dishes in my sink. I was drowning. Drowning in due dates, late nights, and unobtainable expectations, most of which were coming from myself.

Basically, things were really bad.

It has always been mysterious to me how nothing feels like it changes day to day, but the shift from December 31st to January 1st always seems monumental. Suddenly everything feels a little bit fresher. I’m not saying I suddenly arose from my bed, threw back my curtains, and sang along with the birds. But overall, I felt a little better.

It probably sounds like the year was all bad. Which don’t get me wrong, it was really tough. But I learned valuable lessons that helped me prepare for a better 2017. Though I would never go back and relive it, it was one of the best years because it showed me what I needed to change in my life.

If your year was as rough as mine, here are a few tips on how to make some changes.

1. Stop trying to change things out of your control.

It’s much easier said than done, but once you realize that you are only in control of your own actions, life gets a little bit simpler.

2. Learn to say no.

If you’re not free to be somewhere Friday at 3 p.m., don’t drive yourself insane trying to make yourself available. Or if you simply just don’t want to go out for the night, don’t.

3. Take time to take care of yourself.

Self-care is extremely important. Make some time for yourself. Take a bath, watch a movie or my personal favorite, take a nap.

4. Find what makes you happy.

You only get one life to live. Find the things you enjoy and pursue those things. Happiness can be found through yourself.

5. Adopt 8 dogs.

This is just a suggestion, but I firmly believe it would improve the quality of your 2017 by 300%.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
