There has been quite an influx of articles recently criticizing and condemning the new up and coming Millennial generation. The articles mostly written by the baby boomers themselves are nothing new. And I get it, they don't understand our obsession with social media and all things selfies. But what I'm confused about are the people who are Millennials themselves, hating the generation from which they hail from.
I would be lying if I said I wasn't annoyed by my own generation, but I'd also be lying if I said that the Baby Boomer generation was the greatest generation to walk the earth.
Every single generation has had its own share of division. The time period of which Baby Boomers came from was rich with racism and bigotry, which is still prevalent today.
Of course not everyone in the Baby Boomer generation agreed with the notion of segregation as seen with the Civil Rights Movement.
Wait a minute. See what I did there?
Obviously not everyone in the Baby Boomer generation was as accepting, but I didn't blame an entire generation for the actions of a few.
Yes, a lot of Millennials are obsessed with selfies and wanting to be the coolest person in the room. Most Millennials would rather Instagram their food than read a book. Some Millennials will be quick to tell you to check your privilege unaware that they themselves have privilege.
But for every Kylie Jenner in the world there are a hundred Malala Yousafzais turning the world upside down and making a difference.
People are quick to judge and discourage Millennials from entering the workforce because we're too selfish and entitled (something the generation before had taught us). That we are too accepting of those who are constantly being marginalized and how dare we speak up for those who are scared to use their voice.
These articles that bash, demean and bring out more hate towards us is the same reason why Trump might actually have a chance at becoming our president.
So before you go off on a wild rant and accept applause from the generation before us, maybe you should try to be the change you wish to see. All these arguments will not change anything and it makes you no better than the rest of us.
