Everyone has that one show. You know exactly what I’m talking about. It's the one that you’re so into, that even watching it for three minutes while you wait in line at Laprima seems completely worth it. You’ll do anything to get through the day as quickly as possible in order to finish the episode that you started on your study break. Although it may seem like a bad thing when you dig yourself into a Netflix hole that's so deep that you can never imagine crawling out, it could actually be used for the better. "How could that be?" you may be screaming silently to yourself. For me, Netflix has taught me how to better manage my free time.
My schedule now is usually packed back to back from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., so my high school routine of coming home from school and binge watching six hours of "One Tree Hill" is no longer doable. I realized that if I put “Netflixing” into my already packed calendar, then two things would happen. One, I would be even more organized than before, which isn’t such a bad thing. I would be able to potentially watch even more, which is always the goal, and still have enough time for class, campaigning, Got Consent?, Committee on Student Organizations, University Center Allocations, friends, going out, and a few others. By organizing my calendar down to plans with friends, meetings, class, exercise, and the food that I plan to eat, I’ve been able to squeeze in even more precious Netflix time.
The second result of scheduling my Netflix and chill, (the chill being the ice cream that I picked up on the way back to mudge from the Underground), is the amount of stress that it relieves. With Carnegie Mellon ranked consistently in the top 10 of the most stressful schools in the United States, we all need to find our stress outlet. I use exercise, meditation, and FaceTime to keep my stress down, but we all know that the best way to unwind is to get lost in the world of Netflix. As I’ve said throughout this, Netflix is usually a stress inducer. While you're zoning out to "Gossip Girl," your subconscious won't stop reeling. However, once you begin to schedule and plan your day, Netflix included, you won't feel guilty for that extra episode because your calendar said that it was OK.
