Netflix is the one thing everyone has a love-hate relationship with. It is the best thing out there, but when you actually have a life to operate and things to do, it is the death of us. I can honestly say that I am a Netflix addict. I watch shows on shows when I have the chance, but when I have homework to do and a job to go to, it becomes one of my biggest enemies.
I know a lot of us can relate to this. It seems as though that when we are the busiest our urges are stronger but we all know that starting a new show at the beginning of the semester or right before finals is a very bad idea. It is for this reason that I binge watched Netflix throughout all of winter break. I got through the first five seasons of Friends, countless movies, and got hooked on Scandal. Call me crazy, but we have all been here. We all know how good it feels to get through all the episodes and the satisfaction that comes when finishing a season. We also know how lazy and un-energized we feel after doing so.
The struggle of Netflix is real, but sometimes it is not enough. Hulu is an alternative, if you have gotten through all your favorite shows. This is how I got hooked on How To Get Away With Murder and Modern Family. Now, I struggle with double the pressure to not go back and start a new show on either account.
As if these weren't inconveniences already; when we log onto Netflix or Hulu, we have the biggest debate. Which show will I start? Do I watch a movie or a TV show? Maybe a documentary? These are all questions we hate to make a decision on. Once you do decide, you get attached to the show or movie. You even start wondering what life would be like if it was actually like in the show. This happened to me with Scandal. It got to the point where I thought Fitzgerald Grant was actually our President of the United States of America.
Even more, we experience anxiety and our patience is always tested when your show is loading. You keep waiting and waiting and with that comes all the anxiety. Once the show has loaded, you get even more upset when you realize that you already watched the complete episode so now you have to go back and wait another era to start the episode you actually left off on.
Always remember that if your Netflix plans are not going as you wish, maybe it's because the time to take a break and do something active is now. If I was only as committed to academics as I am with Netflix. That would be a beautiful thing. But like every other college student, I will continue to enjoy and binge watch while I'm young.
