If you're like me, any spare time you've had this summer has been spent streaming your favorite shows. Here are some of my favorites from past and present.

1. Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

A scene from Moonrise Kingdom.

Giphy

To start off the list, we'll begin with an instant classic from famed director Wes Anderson. Moonrise Kingdom is a kitschy film set in 1965 New England. The plot centers on the love story of two twelve-year-old romantics, who make a pact and run away. Meanwhile, their quaint town is turned upside down in the quest to find them. Quirky, charming, and hilarious, Moonrise Kingdom is able to craft a unique and nostalgic perspective of childhood in the 1960s.

Find it on Netflix.

2. The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (2017)

Normally, I'm not a huge fan of Adam Sandler. However, put into the serious context of The Meyerowitz Stories, Sandler puts out a wonderfully strong performance. This film follows the dysfunctional Meyerowitz family and their never-ending familial strife. The resonance of this film comes from how relatable it is -- they could be the family next door to you. This film has no shortage of laughs, though not the slapstick comedy you expect out of Sandler.

Find it on Netflix.

3. Justified (2010-15)

Giphy

As a Kentucky girl, this show hits home for me. Gun-slinging, cowboy hat wearing U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is sent back to his home district of Eastern Kentucky and finds himself in his home town of Harlan. Raylan finds himself tied up in old feuds, new flames, and juggling his relationship with his ex-wife, all while trying his best to enforce the law.

4. The Crown (2016-)

Giphy

Anglophiles, gather round. The Crown is an immersive Netflix series that chronicles the reign of Queen Elizabeth. As with all television, it is slightly dramatized. However, this show does an impeccable job of giving a glimpse into the ins and outs of the royal family, and you'll learn something you probably didn't hear about in history class.

Find it on Netflix.

5. The Handmaid's Tale (2017-)

Giphy

I'll admit it: this show got me hooked. The Handmaid's Tale is based on the novel by Margaret Atwood (which I also recommend.) It takes place in a dystopian world. Their society is based around traditional values and patriarchal structure. The social classes are heavily stratified, with the lowest class that is still integrated into the society being the Handmaids. This series follows a handmaid named Offred.

Find it on Hulu.

6. Jane the Virgin (2014-)

Giphy

"I feel like it a really great show that's similar to a telenovella. Really it's like a telenovella within a telenovella. I think that people should watch it on Netflix because it's relatable and really funny"
— My twelve-year-old sister

7. Narcos (2015-)

Giphy

Narcos is another dramatization of history, similar in format to The Crown. However, this series follows the reign of Pablo Escobar's drug empire in the 1980s. Narcos is gritty, fast-paced, and gut-wrenching, all with a story that will wrap you around its little finger.

Find it on Netflix.

8. Queer Eye (2018-)

Giphy

With a mesmerizing presence that has taken the world by storm, once you start watching the Fab Five, you won't be able to stop. This show is like HGTV on crack. The Fab Five – Antoni, Bobby, Tan, Jonathan, and Karamo – take on a variety of people and turn all aspects of their lives around.

Find it on Netflix.

9. The Americans (2013-)

Giphy

The Americans is a gripping spy drama. The show follows two KGB agents in the era of Ronald Reagan. In order to fit in and complete their mission, they live under the guise of being a married couple in Washington, D.C.

Find it on Amazon Video.

10. Twin Peaks (1990-)

Giphy

Twin Peaks is a cult classic, first premiering in 1990, then taking a long hiatus until 2017. This show chronicles the investigation of a murder in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. Rife with mystery and many beguiling elements, it's no wonder that this show became a cult classic.

Find it on Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video.

11. Six Feet Under (2001-05)

Giphy

If you love morbid shows, this one is for you. This show follows the Fisher family, who owns their own funeral home. Fittingly, each show begins with a new corpse. In spite of being morbid, this show is always fresh and funny.

Find it on Netflix.

12. Homeland (2011-)

Giphy

Claire Danes' standout performance as CIA operative, Carrie Mathison, made this show a hit. The premise of this show surrounds Mathison's concerns that a POW marine was turned spy and terrorist agent for Al Qaeda.

Find it on Netflix.

13. House of Cards (2013-17)

Giphy

Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright star as an enigmatic congressman and his ladder-climbing wife in this Netflix series. Soon, you'll find out that both will do whatever it takes to achieve their goals, even if it turns them against each other. This political drama is full of twists and turns that keep the viewer on their toes.

Find it on Netflix.

14. Bojack Horseman (2014-)

Giphy

I know what you're thinking. A cartoon? But this isn't just any cartoon. Bojack Horseman follows Bojack's desperate and often hilarious attempts to rejuvenate his fame. This show truly chronicles the strange obsession with celebrities that our culture has, as well as the damage that the Hollywood machine can cause.

100 Iconic Grey's Anatomy Quotes

"You're my person" isn't the only great quote...

Shonda Rhimes has been making grown adults very unstable since 2005. Grey’s Anatomy now has 14 seasons, and it’s still running. OG fans have actually been watching since 2005, and now the series is on Netflix for everyone to watch. AND, incase you are looking for the 14th season, you can find it on Hulu (you’re welcome).

Over the past fourteen seasons, we have seen new interns come through, residents become attendings, and many deaths that left the hearts of viewers scattered in many pieces. Grey-Sloan has seen more of the unthinkable accidents than probably any hospital ever has. Bombings, fires, shooters, you name it, it has probably happened.

For some months now, this show has consumed my life. I recently finished the series. Instead of dealing with the grief of finishing a show, I decided the best way to deal with this grief would be to comprise a list of 100 quotes. (And watch the series again, but that’s beside the point.)

1. "Each of you comes here today hopeful. Wanting in on the game. A month ago you were in med school being taught by doctors. Today, you are the doctors. The seven years you spend here as a surgical residents will be the best and worst of your life. You will be pushed to the breaking point. Look around you. Say hello to your competition. Eight of you will switch to an easier specialty. Five of you will crack under the pressure and two of you will be asked to leave. This is your starting line. This is your arena. How well you play? That's up to you." -Richard Webber

2. “Don't let what he wants eclipse what you need. He's very dreamy, but he's not the sun. You are.” -Christina Yang

13. “You didn't love her! You just didn't want to be alone. Or maybe, maybe she was good for your ego. Or, or maybe she made you feel better about your miserable life, but you didn't love her, because you don't destroy the person that you love!” - Callie Torres

14. "I am not an ugly duckling. I'm a swan."-April Kepner

15. “Okay, here it is, your choice... it's simple, her or me, and I'm sure she is really great. But Derek, I love you, in a really, really big 'pretend to like your taste in music, let you eat the last piece of cheesecake, hold a radio over my head outside your window', unfortunate way that makes me hate you, love you. So pick me, choose me, love me.” - Meredith Grey

16. "I love you. I do. I just, I love you. And I have been trying not to say it. I have been trying so hard to just mash it down and ignore it and not say it and... Jackson is a great guy. But it was never gonna work out, because I love you. I am so in love with you. You're in me. You're like—it's like you’re a disease. It's like I am infected by Mark Sloan and I just can't think about anything or anybody and I can't sleep. I can't breathe. I can't eat. And I love you. I love you all the time. 65. Why does it feel so good to get rid of things? To unload? To let go? Maybe because when we see how little we actually need to survive, it makes us realize how powerful we actually are. To strip down to only what we need. To hang on to only what we can't do without. Not just to survive, but to thrive. -Meredith Grey

66. "You know, he’s acting like I committed a crime. Like my apartment is full of stolen goods. He’s acting like I kept my apartment to hide stolen goods, so I could do illegal organ transplants for money." -Cristina Yang

69. The body is a slave to its impulses. But the thing that makes us human is what we can control. After the storm, after the rush, after the heat of the moment has passed, we can cool off and clean up the messes we made. We can try to let go of what was. -Meredith Grey

76. Ask most people what they want out of life and the answer is simple - to be happy. Maybe it's this expectation, of wanting to be happy that just keeps us from ever getting there. Maybe the more we try to will ourselves to state's of bliss, the more confused we get - to the point where we don't recognize ourselves. Instead we just keep smiling - trying to be the happy people we wish we were. Until it eventually hits us, it's been there all along. Not in our dreams or our hopes but in the known, the comfortable, the familiar. -Meredith Grey

77. “Grief may be a thing we all have in common but it looks different on everyone. It isn’t just death we have to grieve. It’s life, it’s loss, it’s change. And when we wonder why it has to suck so much sometimes, it has to hurt so bad. The thing we gotta try to remember is that it can turn on a dime. That’s how you stay alive when it hurts so much you can’t breathe. That’s how you survive. By remembering that one day somehow, impossibly, it won’t feel this way. It won’t hurt this much. Grief comes in it’s own time for everyone in it’s own way. So the best we can do, the best anyone can do, is try for honesty. The really crappy thing, the very worst part of grief is that you can’t control it. The best we can do is try to let ourselves feel it when it comes and let it go when we can.” -Meredith Grey

78. “I want so much for you. For both of us. So much more than this. More than being stuck with someone who feels stuck. I want you to feel free.” -Callie Torres

'Grey's Anatomy' Taught Me Just How Important Gay Rights Are

This episode opened my eyes and heart.

Attending a Catholic high school made it very clear in my mind that LGBTQ individuals did not fit in with society. I watched as our principle refused to allow students to invite their same-sex partners to dances. I remember our administration fighting against letting a boy on our dance team because they thought it would ruin the reputation of being a Catholic school. The way they were treated in front of me every day became the way I thought the world should treat them too. But I couldn't have been more wrong.

In season seven, episode 12 of "Grey's Anatomy," Meredith Grey encounters a patient who was trampled by horses after his partner set up a carriage ride to take them to sign their domestic partnership papers. His partner explains to Meredith that he had just wanted the day to be special because straight people get to have the most special day of their lives on their wedding day. They get the flowers, the ceremony, the reception, the gifts. At this point in time, all members of the LGBTQ got was their signature on a piece of paper.

I remember something inside of me being moved at the thought of someone simply being in love and not being able to celebrate it because people thought it was "weird" or "unnatural." I put myself in the reverse situation and thought about how much it would break my heart if society did not accept the fact that I want to marry my wonderful boyfriend some day. I cried during the scene in the show because even though it was acting, I could see just how important these two people were to each other and all of the unnecessary barriers they had to cross just to prove that their love was the same as anyone else's.

Maybe this moment was extremely late in my life to have the realization of how hard it must be for LGBTQ people to find happiness in our society, but I am glad I had that realization at all.

Certain religions crucify the LGBTQ community, saying they will go to hell for sexuality because it is a sin. Personally, I have a hard time believing that God could condemn anyone for showing another human being unconditional love.

It scares me how poisonous our society can be at times. 10 years ago, if you asked me how I felt about people in the LGBTQ community, I would probably (wrongfully) say that they freaked me out. These days, while you won't necessarily see me at a Pride parade, you will see me hyping up and supporting my awesome gay best friend to go after his crush. You will see me taking girls hitting on me as a compliment rather than something weird. You will see me openly supporting gay rights because it is the right things to do, human to human.

The saying "love is love" is so simple, yet so incredibly true.

I can't help how much I love my boyfriend and I would never in a million years expect someone to tell me to stop. Who are we to tell members of the LGBTQ community to stay in some box society and religion have built? We aren't. Love is love and you can never and will never be able to put rules and restrictions on a feeling.
