Netflix and chill, anyone?

20
Binge-Worthy Netflix Shows
TV Guide

Ahh, summertime. We are finally done with exams, studying, and all those assignments. This is the perfect time to get some quality Netflixing done! But, wait. You've already finished watching Parks & Recreation, and you blew through The Office in about three weeks. Now what?? Don't worry, because Netflix actually has a lot more to offer as far as shows than you would initially think. Keep reading to discover the next series that is worthy of your upcoming summertime binge!

1. Bob Ross: Beauty Is Everywhere

I am a HUGE fan of Bob Ross, the poufy-haired ray of sunshine who brought the joy of painting into his breathtaking art pieces focused on nature. If you, like me, found yourself watching Bob Ross as a kid, this is the perfect selection for you. There's 30 episodes of Ross's follow-along painting lessons on Netflix, and this is a great choice for relaxing, learning about painting techniques, or just hearing a super cool guy offer up some quality life advice while painting awesome landscapes.

2. Arrested Development

This show has been around since 2003, and is in my opinion hugely underrated. The show's fourth season was put out exclusively on Netflix, so now is the perfect time to catch up on all 68 episodes! It's a sitcom focusing on the Bluths, a formerly wealthy and forever dysfunctional family. The series features creative camera work, voice-over narration, and a loaded cast, including Michael Cera and Jason Bateman. If you like the awkwardness of The Office and the quick humor of 30 Rock, you'll love Arrested Development. There's always money in the banana stand!

3. Bob's Burgers

This show is pretty well-known, but I had to include it because it is one of my all-time favorites and my go-to as far as Netflix binge watching. It's an animated sitcom centered on the Belchers - a quirky, erratic family - who run a hamburger restaurant. Don't let its animated nature fool you; the show deals with mature themes and conflicts, but maintains a light-hearded nature that is honestly just super charming. The characters include grumpy restaurant owner Bob and his free-spritied wife Linda, accompanied by their awkward children Tina, Gene, and Louise. The show has a lot of heart, and the characters offer so much familiarity it's almost like you're hanging out with your own family. (Personally, I'm a total Tina.)

4. Guy's Grocery Games

If you're a fan of the Food Network, I can promise that you will love this show. Four chefs compete in three elimination challenges testing their culinary chops for a chance to win $20,000. However, this isn't your average cooking competition. It takes place in a grocery store, and each round of the competition features a theme centered around some aspect of grocery shopping. The chef that makes it through all three rounds has two minutes to go through the aisles of the store and collect items on a shopping list - each item is worth $2,000. If all of this isn't exciting enough, just think about the fact that Guy Fieri hosts the show. It's honestly such a fun show to watch, and Guy Fieri is just a straight up freak so that helps, too.

5. Chelsea Does...

This Netflix original follows the crazy comedian Chelsea Handler as she explores topics that interest her. So far, she's only released four episodes that focused on racism, drugs, marriage, and Silicon Valley. However, the mini-series is binge-worthy because it's a thorough, unrelenting look at a lot of the societal standards and unspoken contracts that we buy into today. Chelsea has no filter, and isn't at all afraid to tell people just what she thinks. She incorporates the opinions of friends, family, and psychologists into the topics that she discusses, and overall they're really enjoyable to watch.

6. Master of None

I literally cannot say enough about this Netflix series. It's the brainchild of Parks & Rec's Aziz Ansari, and it's just wonderful. Seriously, if you haven't seen it already, watch it right now. There's only ten episodes available currently, but the show has been green lighted for another season coming soon. The show features Aziz in the lead role of Dev, a 30-year-old actor who tries to live his best life in New York City. I've never seen a show that is able to give keener insight into the life of a first-generation immigrant. It tackles topics like interracial dating, racism in Hollywood and the struggles of immigrant parents in such a thought-provoking, honest way. Please, please watch it.

7. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

This show, another Netflix original, is weird, kinda dumb, and really really great. It's a sitcom written by Tina Fey (holla), starring Erin from The Office (HOLLA) as 29-year-old Kimmy Schmidt. Jimmy has to adjust to life in New York City after her rescue from a doomsday cult in Indiana where she and three other women were held by Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm of Mad Men) for 15 years. I know, right? I told you it was weird. The concept is so strange, but the characters are so stinkin' relatable it's insane. My personal favorite is Titus Andromedon, her flamboyant roommate and aspiring actor/singer because he is just so fabulous. The show teeters right on that edge between funny and silly, but never quite crosses the line. I love it. Plus, it gave me the catchphrase "females are strong as hell"!

8. 30 Rock

If you're looking for something super comparable to The Office and Parks & Rec in terms of structure and comedic payoff, 30 Rock is your next stop. The show features Tina Fey as Liz Lemon, head writer for a live-sketch comedy show in New York City. She basically has to juggle the egos of mentally unstable Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) and an insanely vain leading lady, all while trying to live her best life and enjoy some cheese and wine on her couch. If Tina Fey herself won't draw you in, there's also Alec Baldwin! Every member of the cast works so flawlessly together, and each episode features amazingly quick comedic timing. I'm a huge fan of the show, and it is absolutely binge-worthy.

9. New Girl

I had to finish up this list with one of my favorite shows of ALL TIME. It's a sitcom that revolves around an eclectic teacher Jess (Zooey Deschanel) after she suffers a terrible breakup and moves into a loft with three men that all have their own hilarious issues. The show gets real, and combines a lot of comedy and drama as the 30-something stars have to figure out how to adult and like, get jobs and stuff. Jess is a real dork, a total goof, and someone that we can all relate to. Each character is charmingly lame, and they are emotionally-driven to such an extent that they're really believable. I'm actually about to go re-watch this show as soon as I finish this article because it is so incredible. Also Nick Miller, one of Jess's roommates, is a total babe if you like grumpy types (which I do).

10. Friends

Ok, I feel like this one is a total given but I had to add it because I love this show so much. I definitely saved the best for last here. In fact, I got seasons 1-4 on DVD for Christmas before I realized that the whole show was on Netflix, and I would buy them again in a heartbeat. I'm telling you, this show is the real deal. If you've never watched it before, stop reading this article right now. Go watch it. Are you kidding me?! What are you doing with your life? No exaggerating, Friends is probably the best thing that America as a whole has ever produced. It's just a bunch of friends living in New York, trying to live their lives and juggling love and their careers while being amazing. Please watch it, I'm so serious. It will make you feel all your feelings. Dang it, I wish that I had never watched it so that I could watch it all over again for the first time. It's amazing. Plus it's fun to try and decide which character you might be. Personally, I am the baby of Rachel and Chandler, plus the food habits of Joey.

Well, there you have it, folks. You asked for the goods, and I delivered. (Okay, so no one asked for this article specifically, but I can tell that you all wanted it. I could feel it.) I hope that at least one of these shows strikes your fancy! If I've missed one that you think is absolutely essential, feel free to shout it out in the comments below. Happy viewing! Get ready to not leave your couch for a few days!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
