Netflix Is Not A Waste Of Time

Passing the time doesn't always mean wasting it.

If you’re anything like me, and since the people reading this are most likely about seven of my Facebook friends (hi, Mom), I’m assuming you are at least somewhat me-esque, you probably enjoy sitting down to some good Netflix every once in a while . . . or every day . . . OK, maybe several times a day. Maybe your parents have told you to stop wasting all of your time on such a useless thing. You have schoolwork or chores to do; you have an Odyssey article to write (ha . . . I totally don’t procrastinate on those). The same goes for your Tumblr, YouTube, or television; all of these may be used as a distraction, but what about when they’re actually helpful? How much does the intellectual value of something matter when it brings you innocent joy?

Being a worrier (OK that’s an understatement; I am a warrior of worrying), television, books and films have always provided me with a way out. I choose to remember hard times not just by their difficulty but by the things that helped me through them. Hours of "sailor Moon" and "Pokemon" smother the anxiety speckled time of early adolescence. "Star Trek" dominates the hectic middle years of high school. I believe it was good ‘ole Winnie The Pooh who got me through those rough toddler years. They are remembered not with a regretful ache but with an appreciation. When you are depressed, anxious or simply stressed, sometimes just getting out of bed seems like an impossible obstacle. When I couldn’t do that, those stories were always there for me. Even when you have other things that need to be done, isn’t an hour laughing at Tumblr’s stupidest and funniest memes better than an hour of crying? That isn’t a waste of time, it’s an ingenious recycling of whatever energy you have to spare.

Now, I’m not saying you should shirk all of your responsibilities in favor of a binge watch of "Orange Is The New Black" (even if we are all excited for the release of season four), but when you need it, you know that Netflix will be there to distract or inspire you, to calm you orfire you up. That is, if you can decide what to watch.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
