A Netflix Movie for Every Mood And Hidden Codes To Find Everything Else
Odyssey

Movies, like music and art, can move us. Sometimes to tears, sometimes to anger, and sometimes to action. No matter what, when a film can garner an emotional reaction from its audience it has been successful. Also like music and art, people’s tastes in film genre vary. Personally, I have rather eclectic tastes.

In this article I have compiled a short list of Netflix movies in various genres that are all worth a look. There’s one for just about every mood, some combinations of genres, and some that will change your mood.

1. A Girl Like Her (2015)

Written/Directed: Amy S. Weber

Stars: Lexi Ainsworth, Hunter King, Jimmy Bennett, Amy S. Weber

This movie takes the experience of being bullied in high school to another level by showing the relentless bullying of high school girl, Jessica Burns, by her former friend, Avery Keller. The movie is a Mocumentary-Drama told in hidden camera and documentary form.

The movie, while based around the victim, is centered on the bully herself through hidden camera footage of Avery’s unyielding harassment of Jessica on a daily basis. This film is a powerful reminder of what victims of bullying go through and the fact that modern times allows for bullying even outside of school through social media and text messages. It pulls you in through its up close and personal, and fiercely realistic, film style that makes you feel like you are truly experiencing everything with the characters. By the end of this movie I was truly moved to tears.

2. How I Live Now (2013)

Director: Kevin MacDonald

Stars: Saoirse Ronan, George MacKay, Tom Holland…

This British Drama is based on the 2004 novel of the same name, by Meg Rosoff. It begins with an American teenager, Daisy, arriving in the English countryside for a summer vacation with her cousins and her Aunt, “an expert in loony extremists,” to heightened airport security and the news of a bombing in Paris. Daisy is borderline anorexic, full of neuroses, is extremely angry at the world around her, and doesn’t seem at all happy about her forced vacation. Just as Daisy is beginning to enjoy herself a nuclear bomb is dropped on London and World War 3 erupts around them. After the enemy arrives in their area, martial law is ordered and the boys and girls are separated and sent to different locations. Daisy and her young cousin Piper must find their way back to the country house through enemy territory with the hopes of finding her scattered family.

3. Perfect Sisters (2014)

Director: Stanley M. Brooks

Stars: Abigail Breslin, Georgie Henley, Mira Sorvino

Perfect Sisters is based on a novel, as all good movies are, but the title would give away the whole plot so I’m not giving it. However, both the novel and movie are based on a real-life murder and are listed as a Canadian Crime-Drama.

The movie itself revolves around two teenage sisters who depend entirely on each other for the strength that their depressed, alcoholic mother lacks while lying their way through the social scene of high school and dealing with their mother’s inability to hold down a job. Feeling trapped in an endless cycle of abuse and neglect due to their mother’s actions, and being met with no help from others, the girls come up with a plan to rid themselves of the disaster she creates in their lives.

4. The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas (2008)

Director: Mark Herman

Stars: Asa Butterfield, Vera Farmiga, David Thewlis

In this British Holocaust-Drama, 8 year old Bruno is lonely and friendless after his son is promoted to Nazi Commandant and the family must move closer to the camp where he works. While exploring one day Bruno comes upon a tall fence. On the other side of the fence is a boy his age named Schmuel who lives in the camp where Bruno’s father works. The pair soon become fast friends, although neither is able to bypass the fence. The boys’ lack of understanding of the nature of the camp is shown through their discussion over the fact that all the people in the camp are required to wear striped pajamas. The movie itself is eye opening and heart wrenching. There won’t be a dry eye in the house by the end.

5. Frequencies (2013)

Director: Darren Paul Fisher

Stars: Daniel Fraser, Eleanor Wyld, Dylan Llewellyn

Frequencies is listed as an Independent British Science-Fiction Romance and takes place in a world where a person’s worth is determined by set frequencies that every person emits that governs their amount of luck in life, and therefore, how successful they are in life.

Isaac-Newton Midgeley, known as Zak, is a Low Born who is determined to change his fate so that he can form a relationship with High Born Marie-Curie Fortune. Throughout their youth Zak attempts to court Marie which always results in disaster because of their opposing frequencies. Eventually Zak and his friend Theo are able to temporarily raise Zak’s frequency using magnets and the sound waves given off by gibberish two-syllable words, which enables Zak and Marie to begin a relationship. However the pair soon discovers that the words actually have mind controlling properties which leaves Marie to question if what she feels truly is love. At the same time a government organization detains Zak, as he is a risk to society with the knowledge he possesses. The movie is a series of ups and downs that causes you to question if fate truly exists.

6. Cruel & Unusual (2014)

Director: Merlin Dervisevic

Stars: David Richmond-Peck, Bermadette Saquibal, Michelle Harrison

This movie, a Canadian Surrealistic Thriller, will take you on a journey through the bizarre. The movie begins strangely and maintains a level of dreamlike quality throughout the film. It begins in a bathroom where a man, Edgar, is giving CPR to his wife, insistently trying to bring her back to life before collapsing dead on the floor himself. Suddenly, Edgar is driving in his car and he and his wife begin arguing about her thirteen year old son. Immediately you can tell that Edgar knows there is something wrong here; as if he is experiencing deja-vu. Their day seems to be going on as normal until Edgar becomes ill. When he goes through his bedroom door he is suddenly transported to a strange hallway in an institution where he comes upon a support group for murderers of all kinds and is believed to be a killer himself. Wrongly accused of killing his wife, Edgar is condemned to relive her death over and over again for eternity, unless he can find a way out.

7. Bound to Vengeance (2015)

Director: Jose Manuel Cravioto

Stars: Tina Ivlev, Richard Tyson, Bianca Malinowski

Bound to Vengeance is a Horror-Thriller for anyone who likes when justice is served appropriately.

The movie begins when Eve, a 21 year old young woman, is being videotaped by her boyfriend; they both seem happy and carefree. In the next scene, Eve awakens in a locked basement and chained to the floor by her ankle; it is easy to tell that she had been held there for some time. When her captor comes to feed her she injures him and escapes to outside the house, where she realizes that they are in the middle of nowhere with no phones to call for help, but that there is a van. In the van she finds a stack of pictures of other girls that are being held captive like she had been. At this point Eve makes the decision to force her captor to free the other girls; by any means necessary.

8. After the Dark (2013)

Director: John Huddles

Stars: James D’Arcy, Sophie Lowe, Daryl Sabara

After the Dark is listed as a Science-Fiction Psychological Thriller. That’s just a whole combination of awesome. The plot is simple but varied.

Philosophy students at an international school in Indonesia must decide who lives and who dies in a hypothetical apocalyptic event exercise. Throughout the exercise their Philosophy Professor consistently contradicts their arguments and throws curve balls into the scenario in order to confuse their rational answers and turn them against each other.

9. Mr. Nobody (2009)

Director: Jaco van Dormael

Stars: Jared Leto, Sarah Polley, Diane Kruger

This movie, a Science-Fiction Drama, will keep you asking, “What the heck is going on?” But in a good way. This movie is all about possibility with a little fate on the side.

Nemo Nobody, the last mortal on Earth after humans have achieved quasi-immortality, is near death at 118 years old in the year 2092. With his memory fading due to old age Nemo tells his psychiatrist that he is 34 and it is 2009. From there, Nemo reflects on the moments in his life that his decisions would have resulted in his life taking different paths. Under hypnosis, he can remember back to before he was born. He says that before you are born you can remember everything that will happen after you are born. When it is your turn to be born the Angels of Oblivion take away those memories, but they missed Nemo. Later, Nemo relays his life to a journalist; but not just his one life, all his possible lives as well. So many intertwined storylines spur from one moment in Nemo’s life; all possible lives he could have led, had he made a different decision back in that moment.

10. We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)

Director: Lynne Ramsay

Stars: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller

A British-American Psychological Drama about a mother, Eva, as she reflects on her parenting after her son, Kevin, commits a horrific crime and deals with life in a town that now hates her for it. Throughout the movie you see flashbacks to Kevin’s troubled childhood, Eva’s frustration and anger, and her husband’s dismissal of her concerns about Kevin’s issues. After a second child is born and Kevin reacts with disdain and jealousy, Eva’s anger gives way to fear for her youngest child. The movie itself is both shocking and saddening as you watch the downfall of a family unit and watch Eva become more and more powerless against her own child throughout the film.

11. Puncture (2011)

Director: Mark Kassen

Stars: Chris Evans, Mark Kassen, Marshall Bell

An Independent film originally released in the U.K. under the title Injustice follows law partners, Mike and Paul, as they launch a class-action lawsuit against the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry. The movie is based on real events. In a David and Goliath style attempt to force hospitals to use Safety Needles, after a nurse pricked with an infected needle brings the problem to their attention, a long battle ensues which dominates the life of lawyer and drug addict Mike Weiss.

12. Odd Thomas (2013)

Director: Stephen Sommers

Stars: Anton Yelchin, Addison Timlin, Willem Dafoe

This movie, listed as a Supernatural Mystery Thriller, will put you through the ringer of emotions. Short-order cook, Odd (yes, that’s his name), uses his clairvoyant abilities to solve murders. The movie is listed as a Supernatural Mystery Thriller but I would also call it a Comedy.

Odd is having visions of dead people on a gigantic scale. He must find out who is responsible for this catastrophic event looming on the horizon and stop them before it’s too late. While Odd is trying to find the bad guy he is also dodging Bodachs, invisible creatures that feed on evil and carnage, and who are showing up in town by the dozen waiting for the feast to begin. But if the Bodachs realize that Odd can see them he’ll soon be on the menu.

13. Stardust (2007)

Director: Matthew Vaughn

Stars: Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro

Want to get back your childlike wonder? Stardust will do it with ageless witches, a boy seeking love, flying pirate ships, a shooting star, and an unforgettable Robert De Niro scene that will have you cracking up.

This Romantic Fantasy-Adventure tells the story of Tristan; a boy who seeks a fallen star for the girl he believes himself in love with; but it turns out that in the magical kingdom of Stormhold, the star is human and her name is Yvaine. Tristan must face-off with witless princes and evil witches in order to return to his home of Dunstan on the other side of the stone wall with the star. Tristan and Yvaine encounter and discover far more than they bargained for on their journey.

14. Time Lapse (2014)

Director: Bradley King

Stars: Danielle Panabaker, Matt O’Leary, George Finn

This Indie Sci-Fi Thriller is full of shock and awe.

Three roommates, one of which is the building manager, go to investigate when there neighbor seems to have disappeared. While they don’t find their neighbor, they do find a wall of photos taken of their living room through the window and a gigantic machine bolted to the floor. As it turns out, the machine that they found prints pictures once a day of things that happen exactly 24-hours in the future. Their neighbor, a scientist, had written in his log of the machine that he had seen his own death. They soon find his body. The friends begin using the camera for personal gain which ultimately results in catastrophe.

15. Haunter (2013)

Director: Vincenzo Natali

Stars: Abigail Breslin, Peter Outerbridge, Michelle Nolden

Haunter is a Canadian Supernatural Horror that is not your average ghost story. The events that transpire are from the point of view of the haunter, not the haunted.

Lisa Johnson is a girl who is the only one in her family who is aware of the fact that she and her family are dead and stuck in a constant loop, repeating the day before her sixteenth birthday over and over again, except that this day is different from the rest. She makes contact with a girl who is alive and who now lives in her house. Lisa is soon faced with the reason that they are all trapped in the home and realizes that they are not the only ones.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
