Two weeks ago, Nintendo released the final two DLC characters for Super Smash Bros, Corrin and Bayonetta. Sakurai and his team finally ended development on Smash and he's taking a much needed and well deserved rest after years of working on it. Needless to say, I was very excited to get my hands on these characters and start messing around with them. Especially for Bayonetta; she came completely out of nowhere and I'm a fan of her games so the news of her arrival in Smash was no doubt crazy.
I started playing as Bayonetta, the night she came out; I rushed back to my dorm after class and sat down to put in some lab time with her. I decided I was going to main her. Me, my roommate and a friend were going to be playing both characters as much as possible so we could learn a lot about each character's strengths and weaknesses. I was already in love with Bayonetta. She felt and played exactly as I expected her to. Corrin looks great as well, very fun aerials and a complete break away from the standard Fire Emblem characters aside from fellow newcomer Robin. We played for hours on end that night going back and forth with victories. We found that both characters have huge potential to be great in the competitive atmosphere, someone just had to be willing to work with them and take them to their limits.
After that night, I spent some time myself playing Bayonetta and messing around with her abilities and I knew she was someone I wanted to stick with. My roommate and I did some one on one matches and that was when we discovered the possible imbalance she brings to Smash 4. She gets easy combos and high damage output and can even end lives with one well placed finisher. Down smashing at the ledge when your opponent recovers high sends them to the shadow realm early and effectively. All of her smashes are powerful and hurt a lot. Witch Time sets up for easy kill setups and even if the user misses the initial timing for slowing their opponent down, the secondary effect, The Bat Within activates and Bayonetta takes reduced damage and teleports away. People are calling for nerfs already and she's taken the whole Smash meta game by storm and is solidifying her way in a definite high tier spot.
But what do I have to say about it all? I like using Bayonetta and of course it sounds like I have a biased opinion towards this but I personally don't believe in nerfing characters so early and doing that in general. Throwing out nerfs hurts the game overall unless said offending object is game breaking. It really has only been two weeks and Bayonetta hasn't been fully explored. There's a lot of good things on Bayonetta but there's also some bad as well. No character is completely perfect. Yes she has glaring problems but if you take the time to figure out what it takes to beat her then there will be no more problems to face after that. One tip I have is to shield her attacks and use grabs. Witch Time is punishable by grabs and play a little more carefully, watch your opponents movements and act accordingly. I know its easier said than done but deal with it and keep playing and the answer will come soon enough. I can admit Bayonetta is a dominant force and she may need to be stopped. Don't nerf, adapt; at least not yet anyway. Give it one more week before this becomes a whole mess of a problem that can't be cleaned up.
