Inspiration is something everyone takes differently: some people get it from movies and others get it from music. Some get inspiration from books while others get it from people. I have recently read a book called "Awaken" written by Katie Kacvinsky. In the book a conversation took place.
I blinked at the fire and shook my head. "My dad always says I'm naive." She smiled.
"That's just what grownups like to call young confidence. Sometimes adults want you to see it as a weakness, when really, it's a gift."
That conversation made me stop and think a little bit; is there truth in that?
Now, in this book everything is done on computers; no one leaves their house and no one socializes with others. Obviously, we don't live in that kind of world so it's not quite the same, but some would argue and say we do. Though everyone can relate to being called naive, when they thought they were being confident. They all say not to be afraid to speak your mind or to share your feeling, no matter what anyone else thinks. Then when you do, you're punished for it? Is confidence really a gift? If so, then why show us that it's a weakness? I know you are reading this and you are thinking.
"It came from a book, a fictional book. What does that have to do with anything?"
The answer is that not everything in a fictional book is fake. The characters, the events that happen, and sometimes the story line is all fake. Stuff like that conversation, though, someone could really think that. They could have been scared to tell anyone, but when they wrote the book, it could have inspired them to share not with just one person but the world. So I have a question for you...well, two actually. Do you think being confident is a gift or a weakness, why or why not? Are you really being naive, or have you found your gift of confidence?
