Let me tell you something, I like makeup. I own a lot of makeup. I wear a lot of makeup. I like to talk about makeup. I had a job in makeup. I like to watch people do makeup. I like to do peoples’ makeup. Let me tell you something else. I don’t like it because “boys will like me more” or because I have self-confidence issues. My friend, please. I could walk out the door right now with absolutely nothing on my face and be just as comfortable with myself as I am when I have a full face on. I’ve been wearing makeup since I was thirteen years old. It started with some purple eyeshadow and frosty pink lipstick and has blossomed into winged liner and a contour sharp enough to cut the person criticizing what I put on my face. We’re going to be myth busters for a hot sec and debunk the theories of as to why girls wear makeup.
1. Myth: Girls wear makeup to impress boys.
BUSTED: Boiiii, I could not care less what you think about the makeup on my face. If that’s the only thing you take into account when you decide whether or not you want to talk to me, do me a favor and just don’t.
2. Myth: Girls who wear makeup are insecure.
BUSTED: I could walk out the door right now with no makeup on and be just as fine with it as I would be if I had thirty-three layers of product on. I don’t wear makeup because I think I need it, let me make that point clear. Do I prefer it when my eyelashes are a little fluttery? Of course, who doesn't? But I don't need it to be like "ayyeee, nice eyelashes."
3. Myth: Girls use makeup as a form of self-expression.
TRUE: Some people paint canvases. I paint my face.
4. Myth: Girls wear makeup for them.
TRUE: Putting on my makeup in the morning or before going out is relaxing. It's kinda nice to watch my cheekbones magically appear on my face with just a stroke of a brush.
5. Myth: Girls get makeup shamed.
TRUE: Women are constantly being criticized for wearing too much makeup because it is “misleading." Calm down. Let me do me.
6. Myth: Girls care what you think about their makeup.
BUSTED Let me just real quick ask you a question: do you think I picked up this $75 mascara at Sephora and said to myself “dang, everyone is going to be so impressed by my mascara wow” or mixed the perfect combination of three eyeshadows to make the perfect brown to go in my crease so that people would compliment me? No. No, I did not. Do you think I am worried what people think when I walk out of the house with a full beat as long as I feel like I’m looking fresh to death? Again, no.
7. Myth: Girls who wear makeup are lying to the world.
BUSTED: Do you think we’re dumb? Do you think we think you think our red lipstick is natural? Bish plz. We know we didn't wake up like this.
8. Myth: Girls who wear makeup look completely different when they take it off.
BUSTED: At the end of the day, your eyes are your eyes, your nose is your nose, and your cheekbones are your cheekbones. No amount of makeup can change the actual structure of your face, so no. We don't look completely different without makeup.
9. Myth: Girls who wear makeup are trying to be someone they're not.
BUSTED: Not once have I ever said to myself “Brittany, today is the day you are going to look just like Blake Lively because you are wearing the same blush she wore that one time in that one movie.” I am me. I put makeup on to look like a more amplified version of me.
10. Myth: Girls who wear makeup do it for themselves, not you.
TRUE. Just to reiterate, I will wear makeup if I want to. If I like that my eyes are green, you know I’m going to be rocking some copper shade on my lids so that when I’m taking a selfie I can be like “well frick, your eyes are flipping piercing.” If you don’t want to wear makeup, you don’t have to. Do whatever makes you happy and makes you feel like you can conquer your day. For me, makeup makes me happy. So just let me be happy without criticizing what I put on my face, would ya?
