This years E3 has finally concluded and as always, there is quite a bit of information to discuss about the event. A plethora of new games were announced and new hardware, such as: the Xbox One S, Project Scorpio and PlayStation VR. Despite all the hype around the hardware, the most exciting part of E3 is the games. Both the press conferences and floor demos had many amazing games to show. Sony and Microsoft delivered the best conferences and the greatest variety of games. Now I present you with my five favorite games from E3 2016:
5. We Happy Few (Xbox One and PC)
This game is a Psychological thriller developed by Compulsion Games. I had never heard of this title until Microsoft's Press Conference. It immediately gave off BioShock vibes, which was a game that instantly gripped me into the world of Rapture. This game does the same and i was so intrigued by the environment and premise. The main plot of the story is that your character lives in a society where everyone consumes drugs that brainwash the individual. The main character decides to not take the drugs and sees the world in a disturbing, melancholic light. Not much has been revealed about the game play but i didn't really need to see any to become engrossed by the game. It releases on July 26th of this year.
4. Detroit: Become Human (PlayStation 4)
David Cage and Quantic Dream have returned with their new futuristic crime thriller. It seems to revolve around the development and implementation of Androids into society. I was a huge fan of Heavy Rain's story, atmosphere and concept of multiple endings. Detroit looks to take the elements of what made Heavy Rain great in order to create an even more emotionally enthralling game. The studio has revealed that the game will chronicle the stories of multiple characters, with Connor and Kara already shown. The game play focuses on finding evidence and decision making in order to solve certain crimes and create different outcomes. The graphics for Detroit are incredible and might be it greatest strength at this point. I am a big fan of interactive movie type games and have high hopes for Detroit: Become Human.
3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U, NX)
Personally, I have never been a huge fan of the Zelda series. I did not grow up with the game and I do not have any kind of sentimental attachment to the series. This game will be a landmark transition for the series. It is set in a legitimate open world, which is groundbreaking for Zelda. The artistic style of the game is gorgeous and an absolute joy to look at. Nintendo is also welcoming the addition of voice acting which is also a first to the series. The game also gives Link the ability to jump and climb which will add a ton of variety to the game play. The only complaints coming from me are the graphics which definitely look dated and the emptiness of the world. I have had some disappointing experiences with Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess and hope this game changes my opinion on the series. Breath of Fire is set to release sometime next year.
2. God of War (PlayStation 4)
Sony Santa Monica Studios is back with a continuation of the God of War series. This time around they have left behind the Greek mythological influence and the story takes place within Norse mythology. Kratos seems to be back but he is a lot reserved then he usually is. He now has a son that he must raise in train within the Nordic culture. The Hack and Slash fighting mechanics have been replaced with a more defensive and methodical style of game play. It also seems that their may be some RPG elements added to the combat. I really love the direction that the studio is taking the next game. It looks fresh but still retains elements that made the original trilogy so amazing. There is no release date for the game, but I predict a late 2017 timetable.
1. Battlefield 1 (Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC)
My interest in FPS games has vanished entirely in the past several years. I haven't thoroughly enjoyed a first person shooter since Call of Duty: Black Ops which came out over five years ago. What i look for most in games are unique experiences that grip me into an immersive world. Most FPS games tend to fail in this entirely. When i saw the gameplay stream for Battlefield 1 I was blown away. The graphics are incomparable, the game looks like a lot of fun and it takes place during World War I which has not been done in the series. Dice is trying to innovate and that is all i ask. Attempting to go for a risk is better then sticking to the same old formula. For the first time in five years, I am actually going to buy a First Person Shooter. Battlefield 1 is set for an October 21st release date.
