In these times of discrimination and hatred, it is difficult to even have upsetting feelings about this sort of thing. It shocks me that the world has become such a place of fear, unhappiness and most of all, anger.
It seems to be that there is one thing close-minded people find hard to believe...
My relationship is the same as yours.
Why is it that straight couples aren't given a raised eyebrow when they kiss in public, but mothers turn their children away or cover their eyes when two women give a quick peck on the lips? Where is the difference in something romantic like a man getting down on one knee, whether it be to a man or a woman?
For those of you who do not live in constant fear to be out in public with your significant other, you are lucky. You must now take the time to consider the impact certain views have on those of us who are scared to hold hands with the one they love, who are frightful to give a quick kiss on the cheek and who are distraught with the fact that their wanting to kiss their love is considered a disgrace.
Most human beings, regardless of their sexual orientation, have a yearning for love and to feel loved. They want to know that they matter to someone special. They want to be able to build a life with shared goals and common interests with that special person. With all of that being said, a homosexual relationship wants exactly what a heterosexual relationship wants. Both want to be able to succeed in the world as a combined union that stands upon the bases of love, honesty and loyalty.
All couples want to have a sense of mutual respect. Straight and homosexual relationships also want to have an equal division of labor, the ability to make decisions together and to have the right to speak up. What matters most in any relationship is that both sides feel equal.
In the end, always remember that:
- Who I love is who I love.
- What I am is what I am.
- How I identify is how I identify.
Whether it be gay, straight, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, pansexual, etc., don't be afraid to be who you are, because in the end all that matters is your own happiness.
