With the end of summer approaching quicker than we would all care to admit, I cannot help but reflect on how productive I really was this summer. Around the beginning of each summer, I like to make myself an unrealistically long list of tasks that usually does not get fulfilled. Initially, I think that I will have so much free time without school and that I will be able to achieve so many great things. Next thing you know it is 3 a.m. and you have just finished your third movie in a row.
One of the accomplishments I set out for myself this summer was to read more. Since I am an English major I thought it would be fun to read a chunk of classic novels and maybe even be ahead of the game in terms of the classes I will be taking. So I bought the first book on my list and started to consistently read it. However, life just gets caught in the way and suddenly you cannot even find the time to sit down and read a few chapters. Now I just sporadically pick up a book each time I can actually sit down and take a breath. That is where my summer journey of classic novels ended.
Another goal for this summer was to pick up the guitar again. I had dabbled with the guitar for about two years in high school, with the classes and all. I would coupe up in my room and try to learn new songs for hours on end. Unfortunately, when I left for college I was not able to bring along my guitar and would not even have had the time to practice with school and work. Now that I am living in my own apartment and I actually have my guitar with me, I still cannot invest in the time that it takes to get back into it.
Sleep, work, friends and a relationship are the main consumers of my time and it can be extremely difficult to find time for other hobbies, especially when even those primary areas are often in conflict. Sometimes I do not have the energy to stay awake and read or to practice the guitar, which is why laying down and falling asleep to Netflix is a great alternative.
Ultimately, I should not be regretting my time and the way that I am making use of it. Although it would be ideal for me to able to do everything that I wanted to do, that is definitely not the way that life goes. I just need to roll with the punches and keep on moving because life does not stop for anyone. I love that I even got the opportunity to spend so much of my time surrounded by my amazing friends and I should always remember that I have plenty of time to read books and pick up instruments, but this is now and I am going make the most of my time.
