Very often, people ask me how I am always so happy. I believe that the most important key to happiness is your outlook; how you look at life. However, there are many little things you can add to your daily life to add a little (or a lot of) extra happiness.
1. Long Baths
Give yourself an hour to five-hour time slot. This should be relaxing, fun, and of course, happy. I suggest adding lots of bubbles. Lots. And if you’re really feeling funky, throw in a rubber ducky. Let this be a time to think, but not over think. Relax, think about your happy memories and future plans, sing, enjoy.
2. Pleasant Scents
To you, this may be an air freshener, your favorite perfume or cologne, or a candle. Embrace all your senses. Let your nose make you happy, it’s pretty good at it! Have you ever walked into a Bath & Body Works or Hollister and just instantly been taken to a whole new place because of all the strong scents? Find your favorite, buy it, and take it home.
3. A Notebook Full of Things You Love
This is something I started doing last year, and it honestly has made me so happy. The idea is very simple, and only takes up little fragments of time. All you need is a notebook, a pen, and you! All you do is simply write “I love” followed by things you love. This could be as simple as “I love dogs,” “I love pasta,” or it could end up being a whole page describing your love for the moon. Let this take you wherever you’d like it to. And when you’re feeling upset, like the whole world is against you, let that notebook remind you it’s not all bad. Pasta will always be there.
4. Surround yourself with people who make you feel like the best you.
This idea sounds so simple, but it can be a lot harder than it sounds. However, this is so very important. If someone in your life is creating more sadness and stress than happiness, you do not need to keep them in your life. Put your personal health first. There will be amazing people that truly want the best for you and those will be the people who will really make you happy, keep them around.
5. Wake up from a nap, and eat breakfast.
You know that confusing feeling you have when you wake up from an afternoon nap entirely confused and convinced that it is morning? Take that feeling and do something amazing with it. Make Breakfast! This has to be one of the most amazing things I have ever done. I mean breakfast is the most important meal of the day, what could be better than having it twice?
6. Shop for yourself, reward yourself.
As rewarding as shopping for gifts for others can be, don’t forget about yourself. You may have a baby shower, three birthdays, and a wedding to shop for, but don’t forget about you. You see a funky purple lipstick you want to try? Get it! You deserve it a gift, and who says you can’t be the person to buy that gift.
7. Take yourself out to dinner or to see a movie.
As scary as this idea may sound, it is actually oddly relaxing. Imagine going to dinner and having no one try to steal your fries, or going to the movies and having no one munching on your $7 popcorn. It is crazy cool!
8. Paint your nails a color that makes you happy.
I don’t know about you, but after I paint my nails I suddenly feel like I have my whole life together. Paint them something that makes your mind happy. Happiness could literally be at your fingertips!
9. Fly a kite, play with a frisbee, blow bubbles, or jump rope.
There is not an age limit to good, old-fashioned fun. Do the things that everyone else your age forgot exist. Go out on a windy day and fly a kite. Go to an open field with a few friends and toss around a frisbee and/or blow bubbles. Or, even get a few friends and try out some double dutch. Enjoy yourself.
10. Art
Whether this be creating art or admiring it, it is all very pleasant. You don’t have to have any artistic talent to enjoy a good art show or museum. Sometimes it’s nice to just appreciate and take in the talent that exists around you. However, what you may think is a lack of artistic talent should never stop you from creating art. All you know how to draw is a flower? Draw that flower. Let art take you away.
11. Smile
This is probably one of the simplest yet most rewarding sources of happiness in my life. Smiling is an overall good feeling, and something even better than simply smiling is smiling at someone else. Maybe you don’t truly need a smile that day, but you never know when someone else might need one. Don’t be afraid to smile at people. Sometimes the smile you receive back will create more happiness than you ever thought it could
Keep in mind, results may vary, everyone acquires happiness differently. Do what makes you happy and never keep others from their own sources of happiness.
