How 2016 Changed Me

2016 may have been tricky, but it does not mean there were NOT good moments too.

How 2016 Changed Me
Alex Christi

What did you do in 2016? This year, I made a lot of personal changes to my life. I tried out new looks and experimented with my interests and styles. Don't worry — I still had a little fun and managed to accomplish some pretty big goals.

1. I Cut My Hair

My hair was pretty long...

But look how bad*ss I look with short hair!

Sometimes you just need a change. Cutting my hair was one of the best decisions I ever made. I wish I took a video of when the hair stylists took giant scissors and cut off 8 inches of my hair no problem. Sometimes change just feels really good.

2. Stereo Hideout

So I am a music major which means I LOVE nerdy music things. Last spring break, I saw this composer named Stereo Hideout. It was the coolest thing I ever saw. If you like classical music with a twist — check it out! He is super cool.

3. I Literally Built A Lego House

Go to Philadelphia some time. They have random art festivals like this one!

4. I got really good at eye makeup.

I call this look my "Elsa from Frozen" inspired eye shadow look. ;)

5. I Went Playgrounding

What can I say? I love going to playgrounds. They are not JUST for little kids. I told you I had some fun this year.

6. My Senior Recital Was A Success

I finally had my senior recital! When you are a music major, you have to have a senior recital before you graduate. I FINALLY had mine. The light is at the end of the tunnel. Don't my dad and I look nice? Graduation is not far!

7. Got A Pic With My School Mascot

I am a senior and I finally got a cute pic with Rammy — the West Chester University mascot. Go me!

8. I Sat On Top Of A Parking Garage

People underestimate the great views parking garages provide. And hey look — now I appear like a cool rebel girl.

9. I Found An Ugly Christmas Sweater

Yup, I found this and went to an Ugly Christmas Sweater party.

10. I Got A Tattoo

Best spontaneous decision I made!

11. I Bought Purple Mascara

I love purple mascara. Great and easy way to make your eyes pop.

12. I Became A Crisis Text Line Counselor

Mental health is something very important to me. I applied to volunteer through the national organization, CTL. Totally honored to serve in this way! Great organization.

It is important to *pat yourself on the back* for the little things that are positive. After having the roughest year of my life, I realized the *little things* are actually really important! Don't forget to relax and reward yourself for working hard. Life is not a straight path and there will be bumps along the way. Remembering to be gentle with yourself - whether life is good or bad - will make a huge difference. Here to a new year - hopefully filled with love, kindness, and happiness. Goodbye, 2016. I am ready to take on 2017!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
