My Advice To New Writers
Hanna Akpan

Dear new writers,

Hi. Welcome to the beautiful world known as writing. If you’re just starting out that’s great. I want to pass on some advice I wish I knew as I started the writing process.

  • Practice, Practice, Practice: When you first start out writing, you probably will suck at it. That’s okay because to become a better writer you have to keep at it. You have to write, write, and write some more. As you continue to write, you will eventually get better at it.
  • Figure out what you like: As you start to write, it would be good you figure out what genre of writing you like. You will probably be able to figure what you like based on what you enjoy reading. For me, I like writing Young Adult novels that deal with romantic, but also having the main character have to overcome something.
  • Keep at it: To get better at something you have to keep doing it over and over again. For me, I stopped writing for a year and then came back to it. I don’t advise you to do that because if writing is your happiness like it is for me, you can image how that year went for me.
  • Share with people: Create a blog, a Tumblr, or even a page for your writing. You need to get your words out there, so people can give you feedback and even develop a fanbase for your writing. I wish I did something like that for my book because it could have really got it out there.
  • Never give up: Writing is hard. It really is and people will tell you can’t make it in the writing game, but I believe in you. Writing is something like no other in the world. For some people, it’s hard, but for you, it comes easier, so keep with it. Never give up. I dream of becoming a bestselling author in the future and I know I can be as long as I never give up.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
