It's true. You don't have to be a lifelong theater kid to give musicals a chance. With a vast array of music genres and storylines, they truly do have something for everyone. If you like listening to music or know how to appreciate a captivating plot— and chances are, you do — then it might be time to pick up a cast recording and go see a show. You might be surprised; theater truly is something incredible.
Musical theater is diverse in nearly every way imaginable. That includes the types of music in different shows, which can be much different than the popular conception of typical Broadway show tunes. Do you like listening to pop or classic rock? If so, then musicals are for you. Try "RENT" or "School of Rock". Are you more into rap or hip-hop, or maybe prefer more operatic voices? That's perfectly OK. Musicals are for you, too. Go see "Hamilton" (I think you can get tickets to that by now, right?) or the classic hit "The Phantom of the Opera".
Music style is a notable component of what makes musicals stand out from one another, but what ultimately defines a show is its storyline. The fact of the matter is that there is a type of show for everyone. Comedy lovers are sure to love "The Book of Mormon", a raunchy satire written by the creators of South Park. For a just more family friendly alternative, Disney fans can go see the vibrantly captivating Disney musical "The Lion King". If neither of those sound appealing, maybe the dark musical thriller "Sweeney Todd" is more your type.
These examples only scratch the surface of the variety that musical theater has to offer. With all of that said, I can't help but wonder what people could possibly not like about musicals. Oh, right. I almost forgot. Nobody actually bursts out into song and dance in real life, you might say. I would argue with that— I'm living proof that it's not so unrealistic after all— but ultimately it doesn't matter. Singing and dancing never feel out of place in quality productions. It might seem odd at first to theater newcomers, but once the production draws you in, it will feel completely natural. Broadway musicals aren't just about beaming smiles, jazz hands and tap numbers (although all of that can be pretty fun, too). They are artistic masterpieces that utilize the power of song to immerse you in the story. They tap into your emotions and allow you to connect with the characters. They give you a unique experience you cannot find anywhere else.
Popular productions are truly diverse from one another, but no matter what professional show you might see, the chances are high that you will be captivated and enthralled by the talent on stage. True, not every musical will be for you, but giving them a chance is a risk worth taking. Go find a quality community theater show, a touring production, or head to Broadway itself. You won't regret it, and might even leave the theater ready to come back for more.
