Anyone can relate to music. Songs hold special places in our hearts and our memories. I find it incredible that music has so much power and influence in our lives. I believe what sets music apart, that an individual likes, as opposed to music he or she does not, are the feelings or memories a song brings back to them.
Songs capture intense moments between people. An original wedding song played on a 50-year anniversary brings back remembrances of the soreness from dancing all night long, the taste of champagne, the picture of a beautiful white gown. That classic jam from 2002 carries the essence of friendship, the smell of salt in ocean air, long rides in the car. Your favorite explicit throwback brings your older brother’s face to mind because you were too young to be listening to that on your own.
I find it crazy that a few lyrics can bring you back to another time in your life -- whether it is a beautiful or comfortless moment. Have you ever listened to a song and automatically thought of a best friend? Your mom? Your partner? It is enchanting that a simple tune shown to you by someone close causes you to imagine his or her presence in your memory.
Sadly, these flashbacks are not always joyful. Tears form as you listen to harmonies or ballads regarding intimate moments shared between companions, but maybe the memories are not as pleasant, anymore. A romantic melody reminds you of the touch of another hand in yours, confusion turned into fights, fierce heartbreak. A hopeful chorus, nowadays, rips your heart apart at the loss of a loved one. Music is powerful.
So make the most of your life. Don’t miss out on the big things. Don’t miss out on the small ones, either. Sing and laugh. Cry when you need to. Listen to your music. But most importantly, listen to your memories.
