If there's one thing you should do while in college (other than graduate with a degree to pursue your dreams), you should do something on a whim. Just go and do something out of the blue. It could be something as small as driving around town and trying a local restaurant you've never been to or exploring the nature-y areas nearby and going on a hike to something a bit bigger like going to a concert in a city two hours away.
This past week, on Tuesday the 19th, one of my best friends and I took a trip to Kansas City, Mo. and went to the Pentatonix World Tour at the Sprint Center. It was about three in the afternoon and Taylorrae texted me saying that the tickets to PTX were about $60 (which is a pretty good deal since they are a popular a cappella group on the rise). Realizing that this was a phenomenal deal to be able to see them, we bought the tickets in a snap. However, we encountered a problem when we bought tickets and ended up buying tickets that were in different areas.
They weren't too far from one another, but she would be in the area right behind me while I was in the pit near the stage. While this was a bit of a dilemma, we decided that this wouldn't be that bad considering we would be able to see Pentatonix live at this concert. Keep in mind, this concert was at eight and our college town is about two hours away from the venue and city we traveled to. So after running a few errands, we hopped into the car about 5:30pm and headed to K.C. The drive was interesting with our various playlists and changes in artists to hype for the concert. I had never driven to Kansas City before either, so driving there was new for me as well.
Two hours later and we finally made it to Kansas City! With 30 minutes until the official start of the concert, we stopped for a quick snack break and searched for parking. Boy, oh boy, was finding a place to park that wasn't that far from the Sprint Center a challenge. There were spots that were right next to the venue, but they were $20! I like to think I am a reasonable person, but that price was outrageous for parking my car for about four hours. That's about $5/hour! So with less than 10 minutes to spare we found a parking spot that was $5 total, but was close to a 10-minute walk away. We started to rush to the Sprint Center, in attempts to make it there just in time. We made it just in time, but we had no idea how to get to our seats, so we wandered around for a little bit before actually figuring out how to get to the floor.
With a little help from the employees, we got the assistance we needed and found our seats. A.J. Lehrman was the opener for the concert, performing his new single "Tongue." Following his performance, the special guest of the tour, Us the Duo, were next to take the stage. After their set, the time came to see the one and only Pentatonix (group).
There was so much greatness that all these artists brought to Kansas City, Mo. that it would take far too long to recall all the details. It was all just that good. I still am in shock at how great they are. Pentatonix is a wonderful group with covers and songs that will blow your mind to begin with, but seeing them live is a whole different experience. Same goes for Us the Duo. (It's probably like that for A.J. too, but he was a new artist to me.) It's been a few days since seeing them and it still feels unreal that I was able to experience such music from amazing musicians like them.
Going on this trip made me realize how much fun taking a spontaneous adventure is. You may encounter a problem or two, but it is so worth it. Doing something on a whim may seem new and scary, but it is definitely the sort of activity to partake in, especially while in college (or young, that is). Live in the now. Don't plan it, just go and try something new.
