Top 7 Artists You Should be Listening to

With an overwhelming amount of music on the table in recent years, finding new artists can be discouraging. It is important to keep in mind that there is more music than just what is played on the radio. With programs such as Sound Cloud and Spotify the releasing of music has become much more applicable to even the newest of rockers. So, with such a large flow of music allow me to help you with seven artists you should be listening to.

1. Years & Years

In the new age of electronic beats and addictive hooks, the up and coming British three man band Years & Years provides these new musical qualities, which today people are feeding on. Formed in 2010, the synth pop trio got their first radio play in 2013 with their track “Traps” and have been on the radar since. In 2015, the group was named BBC’s number one artist to watch.

Years & Years’ most popular tracks include: "King", "Desire", "Eyes Shut", and "Shine".

2. Spooky Black

An under the radar 17-year-old with a heaping helping of talent for lyrics and hypnotizing bass lines is exactly who you get when you hear Spooky Black. Behind the stage name, Corbin Lambert was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1997. Credited for gaining a name and collecting fans with little to no promotion, speaks for the amount of talent Black possesses. Black’s music is categorized as R&B with synthesized melodies that you’ll find yourself getting lost in.

Spooky Black’s most popular tracks include: "Reasons", "Intro (Leaving)", "Pull", and "DJ Khaled Is My Father".

3. Snakehips

Oliver Lee and James Carter are the two halves of the whole that is Snakehips. The duo produces electronic hits in the genres of rap, alternative, and a tad of R&B. The United Kingdom producers gained success in 2010 and on with remixes to popular tracks such as "Warm Water" by Banks and "Wanderlust" by The Weeknd. In 2015, with the release of "All My Friends" featuring Tinashe and Chance, the rappers Snakehips have begun climbing in success. Snakehips are truly a couple of club-hit makers.

Snakehips most popular tracks include: "All My Friends", "Gone", "Days With You", and "Forever".

4. LANY

Paul Jason Klein. If the name isn’t enough, the rise lead singer of the three-man group LANY has more than enough talent, looks, and amazing hair to spare. LANY provides every teenage girls dream when it comes to boys to crush over. With lyrics that discuss running away, smokey scenes, and kissing necks, you can hear the girls running from miles away. The group’s sound is very reflective of 90s pop stars such as Michael Jackson and duo GO WEST. Gaining success that they deserve, LANY will be touring in Europe with Ellie Goulding starting 2016.

LANY’s most popular tracks include: "ILYSB (I love you so bad)", "Walk Away", "Made in Hollywood", and "You Are Fire".

5. Chelsea Jade

From the town of Auckland, New Zealand, comes Chelsea Jade, formally known as Watercolours. With her career just taking off with the release of her first EP and single released in 2015, not much information is out about Jade. However, with a powerful EP and dance hit "Low Brow", the future looks bright for Chelsea Jade. Her music is very much pop star to-be with an alternative spin that makes you want to dance until the sun comes up.

Chelsea Jade’s most popular hits include: "Low Brow", "Visions", "Night Swimmer", and "Find Me".

6. FMLYBND

Straight out of Santa Barbara FMLYBND delivers a danceable sound that has very grunge influences that give them their unique sound. With the releases of their debut EP in 2014, the one woman, three men act has had their hit “Come Alive” featured in the most watched television event in the world, FIFA 2015. The band hopes to keep pushing hits that make their fans want to dance with their friends.

FMLYBND’s most popular hits include: "Come Alive", "Electricity", "With You (Jai Wolf Remix)", and "Letting Go".

7. Glass Animals

Based in Oxford, this four-man group delivers the most hypnotizing and groovy tunes you could possibly imagine. The band’s perfect delivery most likely comes from the fact that the four boys have known each other since they were 14. After graduating from their respected universities, they released their first EP “Leaflings” in 2012. Since the band has released their first EP, they have also released a full album “ZABA” which sticks to the band's hypnotic sound.

Glass Animals’ most popular tracks include: "Gooey", "Toes", "Pools", and "Cocoa Hooves"

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
